My "first" was a slim blonde .. Huh ... I mean a CZ75Mil. Its been a solid firearm and forgiving. Of course then I bought a .22 so I can actualy afford to practice. While the idea of a .22 as a first gun is a nice one, I think it's more of a side effect of people growing up with guns around the house and getting a .22 as their first personal gun. Personaly I grew up in a gunless home ( in fact a gunless country, at least as far as the civilians were concerned) and my first gun was a 9mm because it had to play the multiple roles of practice gun, learning gun, and home defence gun. When your home already has defence guns it, is easier to argue about buying a .22 as a first gun.
I would recommend a 9mm, DA/SA if possible. Glocks are fine, but I belive that a DA/SA semiauto teaches you a lot more about how firearms work then a striker. This is however just my biased opinion as I dont like polymer in general (it's balance thing for me). As of why 9mm, because its cheap, recoil is mild, and is not a bad defence round (PLEASE lets not argue defence rounds). Also you may wish to point him towards a semiauto that he can get a .22 conversion kit for.
Just like every one else here, I say that he should find a range that rents out guns and try a few. I have a aquitance which is going through the same thing and we took him out one day and fired the following: CZ75, USP9, Buckmark, MKII, 92FS, Cougar 8045, and DE .357. That selection might have been a bit extreme and confused him more then helped, but you get the idea.
Best of luck.
