He does bring up good points. Many comparitive ethnic studies classes have become little more than "I hate white people 101." As soon as the white man shows up they focus on what he did instad of staying on topic.
Tuition at many universities has been increasing at a rapid pace and funds disapear into pet projects. Minorities do get special treatment at some places. "Women's studies" today are little more than a political front. Also, when was the last time you saw a "Men's Studies" program? (So much for equality considering men are now the minority on campus.) There are Speech codes that are arbitrarily enforced. Many administrators have the idea that minorities are incapeable of racisim/lying and it MUST be the white person who is the trouble maker. (Look no further than the Duke Rape case for good examples.)
Yes I am jaded, the local university stole $800 outright from me by lying to my face about class seating avilability. Even more $$$ with incompitent professors. Was I angry, was I upset, HELL YES!!! One of many reason why I transfered to a tech school and double checked everything to make sure I was not getting reamed.
A good friend had his TA position yanked out from under him with no warning whatsoever. He had no negative feedback from his professors, yet his performance was listed as being "unsatisfactory", or something to that effect, as a reason for dismissing him. They had repaced him before they even told him about it.
Students in one of the programs at the local U have to pay $1,600 over 2 years to LEASE a laptop computer. ($400 per semester.) They do not have the option of buying their own. At the end of the 2 years they can "buy" the laptop for several hundred more dollars. Looking at laptops today, you can buy a MUCH better system than what they get for $1,600. Heck, you can get a really nice unit for less than $1,000 in todays market.
I can go on and on with several more examples. Many universities are becoming more worried about $$$ than with education.
Having been screwed over by the system before, I can say that his feeling and writings are quite reasonable considing the crap students need to put up with to get their name on some piece of paper.
MLK Jr. said in his famous speech - "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character." I judge people on an individual basis, yes I remember past experiences with similar individuals, but I allow a person the chance to show that they are either worthy or not worthy of respect.
Universities today are doing the exact opposite, they are judging based on skin color and not on the content of ones character. Their actions are telling these minorities, "You ARE inferior to the white man, you are unable to compete with him, therefore you need special treatment and help." This I find absolutely disgusting.
When I say a person is black, I say it as a physical characteristic to describe them. Much like someone would say I am the white guy with long brown hair and glasses. I wish others would to the same instead of using race as an excuse or an explanation for a persons actions, success, failure, etc.
