Free Speech is Okay, Unless You Favor Gun Rights

What he's saying may not be politically correct.....

...and it may not be popular....

...and the college administration may not like it....

...but I don't think the First Amendment was recognized in the Constitution to protect speech that gives everyone warm fuzzies. :p

How many people here have posted things that, if our bosses/teachers/coworkers/etc. saw posted on your door, would probably want YOU to get a psych eval before you could come back into society?

We don't have to like what he said....but we'd better defend his right to say it...or we won't have anything left to say later....

Not quite a correct exposition of 1st am law as it applies to this rude idiot. Better would be Imus, but even that is a stretch.

As I said earlier, he'll have to show the school suspended him for speaking his mind about school policies regarding minorities, or regarding concealed carry, and not because they felt he was a threat to himself and to the school.

Most of his rant looks harmless, but this one may be used against him by paranoid administrators. He is somewhat admitting that he is mentally ready to snap, the fact he owns guns, and the VT shooting is so recent, doesn't make the suspension surprising.

there may be people on the edge ready to snap. I cant say I blame them, I myself am tired of having to pay my own extremely overpriced tuition to make up for minorities not paying theirs.

Yes he does. Does that mean he should be suspended?

I don't know...it's a private school, I guess they should get to decide. Provided he's not being suspended for being part of a protected class, of course. "Bitter white guy" isn't a protected class.

If somebody wrote that crap to me, or towards me in a public forum, and I ran a two-bit private college I may well suspend them. Of course, at the same time I'd never attend such a college because I wouldn't want to have to deal with despotic administrators like myself. ;)

He does bring up good points. Many comparitive ethnic studies classes have become little more than "I hate white people 101." As soon as the white man shows up they focus on what he did instad of staying on topic.

Tuition at many universities has been increasing at a rapid pace and funds disapear into pet projects. Minorities do get special treatment at some places. "Women's studies" today are little more than a political front. Also, when was the last time you saw a "Men's Studies" program? (So much for equality considering men are now the minority on campus.) There are Speech codes that are arbitrarily enforced. Many administrators have the idea that minorities are incapeable of racisim/lying and it MUST be the white person who is the trouble maker. (Look no further than the Duke Rape case for good examples.)

Yes I am jaded, the local university stole $800 outright from me by lying to my face about class seating avilability. Even more $$$ with incompitent professors. Was I angry, was I upset, HELL YES!!! One of many reason why I transfered to a tech school and double checked everything to make sure I was not getting reamed.

A good friend had his TA position yanked out from under him with no warning whatsoever. He had no negative feedback from his professors, yet his performance was listed as being "unsatisfactory", or something to that effect, as a reason for dismissing him. They had repaced him before they even told him about it.

Students in one of the programs at the local U have to pay $1,600 over 2 years to LEASE a laptop computer. ($400 per semester.) They do not have the option of buying their own. At the end of the 2 years they can "buy" the laptop for several hundred more dollars. Looking at laptops today, you can buy a MUCH better system than what they get for $1,600. Heck, you can get a really nice unit for less than $1,000 in todays market.

I can go on and on with several more examples. Many universities are becoming more worried about $$$ than with education.

Having been screwed over by the system before, I can say that his feeling and writings are quite reasonable considing the crap students need to put up with to get their name on some piece of paper.

MLK Jr. said in his famous speech - "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character." I judge people on an individual basis, yes I remember past experiences with similar individuals, but I allow a person the chance to show that they are either worthy or not worthy of respect.

Universities today are doing the exact opposite, they are judging based on skin color and not on the content of ones character. Their actions are telling these minorities, "You ARE inferior to the white man, you are unable to compete with him, therefore you need special treatment and help." This I find absolutely disgusting.

When I say a person is black, I say it as a physical characteristic to describe them. Much like someone would say I am the white guy with long brown hair and glasses. I wish others would to the same instead of using race as an excuse or an explanation for a persons actions, success, failure, etc.

unfortunately it's shmucks like that guy who make gun owners look bad.

Anti-gun people don't hate the guns as much as they hate the gunners. They see them as lower- and working-class redneck bible-thumping hillbillies, and this guy lives right up to that standard... an anti-gun stance is more about socioeconomic and cultural snobbery than anything else.

First, the guy in the article is a schmuck. And I'll apologize on behalf of the working class "bubbas" who don't live up to the high standards of those upstanding citizens like Ted (I'm a drunk elitist) Kennedy, Rosie (I deserve guns but not you) O'Donnell.

Nawww................I don't think think so, I find them as repulsive probably more repulsive than they would find me.

So that's the only choice? Either a backwoods hillbilly or a drunk elitist? Perhaps there's something in the middle...yknow, where the rest of us live?

I said I was a working class bubba, and Rosie isn't a drunk or a hillbilly, she's well I'm not really sure what she is, so I guess you have four choices:p

Just kidding Redworm, just trying to point out that just because you enjoy firearms doesn't mean you should have to change who you are to fit in a more palatable segment of society.

Absolutely. However it also doesn't mean that those who are not considered the typical firearms enthusiast - for example, a dark-skinned bisexual agnostic computer geek - should be ostracized. It does us more good as gun owners to welcome all who believe in their right to keep and bear arms and to discourage those who spew vile hatred of anything non-white and non-christian from making the rest of us look bad.

Ummm, I believe that is what I said. I just saw no reason to bring race or sexual orientation into the conversation.

I understand, I was referring back to the original topic of the thread. This guy, a firearms enthusiast, spent as much time bitching about blacks and jews than he did arguing for his right to carry. That's what makes us look bad.

unfortunately it's shmucks like that guy who make gun owners look bad.
that's the post that started this line of conversation, just going back to that point yaknow :P

Yeah and there are ways to address that so that even the looney left cant do anyhting about your argument, primarily becasue you dont sound like the looney right.

This so called college student failed in his task then.

No you shouldnt and there was a time when the "working man", the "bubba", the decent hardworking religious folks that made this country great were admired and respected by even the snobbish elite...thats until the image of the working man got distorted by the snakes in their midst.

I think they are currently installing the soft serve ice cream machine in hell because WildAlaska and I agree on something:cool:

IMHO a concealed carry permit means concealed. I don't let anyone know I own a gun and I don't let anyone see me carrying a gun. It is there for protection and not as a political signpost. This guy at Hamline is an idiot who is reaping the rewards of his idiocy. A School does not have to allow free speech, only a government does. If you come to my house and start spouting bigotry I will invite you to leave. I don't need to hear it. Incidentally, you will not be invited back.

Enjoy your RTKBA but keep it quiet in your personal life. In your political life be a loud and insistent as you can, but don't leave yourself open to harassment or arrest. Unless you enjoy being hassled.
