Looking at the free internet providers: Netzero, Bluelight, Juno, ZD. Can anyone who uses any of these give me the good, the bad and the ugly. Thanks for your help.

Regards,
Frank

Netzero and Juno have big ugly pop-up banners. Juno's isn't as obnoxious as Netzero's, but on my little 14" monitor, they're all big and ugly. :(

I had bad luck with NetZero and Freei. Too many connection problems, not worth the hassle. And I only used these as backup ISPs. Maybe it's only me though as I have not heard too many complaints about the above two ISPs from others.

Watch out if you're in a small town like I am.

I signed on to Juno, gave 'em the minimum info they requested, THEN found out they had no local number for me. I would have to use a toll number. See ya.

In the meantime, I have been flooded with all kinds of Spam from advertisers who no doubt got my name from their list.

I got sick of Netzero's constant 15 minute service failure that i'd been having recently.

So i switch over to Altavista. Seems to be working ok so far.

The biggest hickup is trying to download anything large, as the service thinks your not using it and will log you off. :(

Faiello5 and anyone else who cares to know, send me an enail and I will explain a way to get free email access with NO banners.

No, this is not a sales pitch or anything of the sort, I just don't want to disburse this info TOO widely since if too many people start doing it, it may get cut off.

But since you all are TFL'rs, I don't mind passing the wealth :D

If you decide to go with Bluelight save yourself some major headaches and just take your computer out in the yard and shoot it. The results will be the same and far less frustrating and time consuming.

Freei is giving me fits lately. I've got two other freebies that are better, but not by a whole lot. Here's a related question...I have found that the first few weeks after signing on with most free ISPs the service is pretty decent, then it quickly goes to pot. Do they give access preference to new users? Sure seems like it to me.

I`ve been using Alta Vista as a back up isp with good results. You can scrunch the ad banners down to a size where they are`nt too bothersome and I`ve had no problem hooking up.

Agreed with fmjcafe. I hardly ever have to use a modem (outside of my cable modem) *HAHA*, but if I do, I use AltaVista. I've found that their service is the "friendliest" so far. Like fmj said, you can bumb those banners down to about a 1"x4" area which doesn't take up too much room. Their availability is pretty good too.

There are a few more out there. I started with Netzero. The banner is annoying, and it takes forever to load. Then I went to free inet, loaded faster, but still a nasty banner. The one I am using now is FreeDSL. They haven't given me the free dsl yet(turning blue holding my breath,) but they do have a free dial up to use while you are waiting. It is much faster, and has a tinie tiny banner at the top. So far it has been the best one. Also no crap about clicking on banners if you let it sit on line for awhile. It does note if you have been doing nothing at all and will disconnect, but it has nothing to do with clicking on ads, sort of like AOL does when they think you are just wasting a connection. www.freedsl.com

Its not worth it.
Go with a DSL connection - which may be a few more bucks a month than a standard connection - ITS MONEY WELL SPENT.

Think of the difference between a Hi-Point pistol and a Wilson Combat. DSL is THAT GOOD.

DSL is also that RARE, George. Those of us who live more than 2 miles from the central switch are SOL. In my neighborhood, the best I can do is 64K ISDN for $75. No satellite cuz there'z trees and mountains everywhere. No cable. No DSL. And this is in a city of 300,000!

I'll be happy when one comes out with an access number for Truth or Consequences, NM.

I have used www.freeweb.com with good results but they are bowing out in favor of Juno.

You have to be there when it's all over. Otherwise you can't say "I told you so."

Better days to be,

Ed

Free-Email??? I think they want a free ISP account, yes you can use most all of these free ISP's without those nasty banners (very easily too, some take more work than others though) :D

I was spoiled in Alaska. Paid $5.95/month for unlimited access. Here in the San Bernardino area I can find access for $10-$20/month. But could not find any unlimited access providers. So I got Alta Vista, Bluelight, Juno and AOL. I settled on Alta Vista. If it goes out I still maintain my other accounts except AOL.

(I got this from here I think: www.nzlist.org)
