Four new posters. Phrasing suggestions, criticisms welcome

Staff Alumnus
I put these together tonight and would like to make sure the messages are clear and unambiguous. Help is welcome.

I hope the reference isn't too obscure. Maybe puzzled folks would get the book and read it...

Alternate phrasing "Muffies do not." Better, worse?

Again, requires some, if minimal, knowledge on the part of the reader.

I hope the fire extinguisher is recognizable. Pity I only had a paltry first aid kit handy.

PS: If you like these, use them.

They're all very good.

1) I think almost everyone knows at least the premise behind 1984 even if they don't know who Winston Smith is.

2) Maybe: "Airheads Don't."? In any case, I think the contraction is preferable.

3) Don't change this one, it's great!

4) Maybe the bottom line could read: "Get the right tools and the skills to use them." But that might not fit without a smaller font.

Eventually, I plan to add photos of a black man in a business suit, holding an AR15 (Hi, Joel!) Caption: Free Men own guns, slaves do not. Another one of me, "Ctizens own guns, subjects do not". One of an Israeli, "Jews own guns, ghetto dwellers do not"...might have to refine phrasing for that one. This one images was an unplanned addition to the series.

" 1984 " grabbed me by the gut and twisted! It's a keeper!!!

Forum newbie UNlurking:

I've quitely migrated over to this forum provided as a link by an aquaintance at http://www.accessatlanta.com/shared/news/politics/guncontrol.html#guncontrol

I just decided that I would drop in to add my 2cents about 1984. Since it was required reading (when I read it), I was required to study it. I found it quite interesting, which actually helped at the time..

So bottom line is that I plan on using that pic you provided.

Thanks!

Those are great Oleg. I really like #3.

I thought #3 and #4 were especially good. The others didn't ring well with me. the picture (purse and gun vs. Barbie doll) is a good one; but I think the copy could use work. However, since I can't think of a better alternative phrease, I should probably just keep my mouth shut.

The one with 1984 should work fine. As someone said, whether you remember Winston Smith or not, most people will see the cover of 1984 and realize the kind of oppression you're talking about.

I too might change the wording of the Barbie-doll poster. I think I'd try to make it so the two phrases were more alike:
"Strong women own guns, plastic women do not." Maybe not exactly that, but something similar so that it's impossible for the reader not to compare the two.

Good work as always, Oleg. I think the fire extinguisher works perfectly. Actually, if you think it's unclear, what about a pic with only the fire extinguisher and the gun--couldn't you then zoom in some so the extinguisher would be larger in the frame?

I can see your literary series coming now:
"Winston Smith was not allowed to own a gun." (1984)
"The Franks were not allowed to own guns." (Diary of Ann Frank)
"George and Eliza were not allowed to own guns." (Uncle Tom's Cabin--I think it was George, anyway.)
Or, "What happened the last time the elite were armed and slaves kept disarmed?"

Finally, congratulations on the Kahr. Hope it's yours, those are pretty neat.

Anyone with ideas for the Barbie poster? I am trying to make a point that I would expect only decorative, dependent people to shun defensive armsthe means of fending for themselves. Basically, as statement for Ms.Forum regulars.

Oleg, I like them all but that last one really stands out. Ironic, I was making a point with someone yesterday, trying to explain having a gun on hand is not paranoid, it is simply another precaution...your picture said a thousand words. :D

I think the strong women/plastic women is closer to the mark but not exactly on point. I think the ideal here is to identify the traits that feminists associate with strong, independent type women (kind of Murphy Brown image) with firearms ownership and tie the lack of ownership to the Barbie-doll crowd.

Maybe we should hop over to the Ms. forum and see what type of language they use to identify the women that they dislike?

Since the BArbi is making everybody pause,

Get a picture of "Ken" with his hands on Barbi's neck,

"Strong women own guns, others go to support groups."

Oleg,

Number 4 is a WINNER!

Can I e-mail the link to a couple of friends?

Great work Oleg.

As an after thought... I would have loved to have seen a legal looking document next to the fire extingusher.... with LIFE INSURANCE POLICY in bold letters. :D

As always, top-notch photography work.

How about a first aid kit with a simple red cross symbol, rather than the words "first aid kit"?

Oleg,

Maybe one of these?<UL TYPE=SQUARE>

<LI>"Strong women own guns; Rape victims don't!"

<LI>"Strong women own guns; weak one's don't!"

</UL>

Oleg,
How about get a scale handgun from those packs of guns made for the 12" soldiers and have a caption "Don't be a Barbie girl", and possibly find a doll that is not the Barbie type that is packing it in a crossdraw holster, while the Barbie doll is knocked over and unseemly things have happened to her (plastic head dented in, legs bent backward at the knee joints, etc.). And maybe have a Barbie cell phone lying nearby (subtle hint of the dubious protective power of police and 911).
For the poster on Jews being armed and secure, how about take the slogan that was above the gates of concentration camps in the Holocaust (arbeit macht frei) and use it like "Arbeit macht frei? Nein! Gewehr macht Frei!" (or whatever word is 'arms' or 'weapons'). But I suspect this would only be usable for those familiar with German. Sorry if my German is poor, but I know very little German.

Oleg,
These are great!
1)I like it. Too bad the last time I read 1984 was in 1982, when it was talking about the future! Boy, do I feel old now, thanks!

2)actually, I think "plastic women do not" is pretty good. if you're trying to get to the feminist, that's pretty good because the last thing any of them want to be called is "plastic." Or, to put a couple of ideas here together, how about, "Strong women own guns, Barbie girls do not." Calling an independent/strong woman a Barbie girl would be a double hit.

3)perfect

4)I like the picture as it is. I guess you could use a Red Cross first aid kit, but actually, I like it now. These are things that you need not only in your home, but also in your car, so it works both ways.

(hey, when you're done, can I have the Barbie, huh huh can I huh huh? She would look cool with a flat top and BDU's :D)

Oh, yeah, I was going to say, regarding #3, since there's also a gun in the picture, maybe, "Does the Bill of Rights apply only to quill pens and muskets?"
dunno, just an idea.
