Found the AR I want!!!

If your're gonna be doing any rapid-fire fun shooting and getting the barrel can't-touch hot, I'd recommend you go with the chrome-lined Stag for $750. over the $596. non-chrome lined. The barrel will last a lot longer for the extra $154.

I just put a Sport on layaway today. Just in time too, the last shipment of 10 rifles they got in late March was sold, except for one. Mine.:p

BTW just to clear everything up, the barrel bore is Melonite treated. It's not bare like the website suggests.

The barrel is melonite treated. Gives a hardness comparable to chrome, but does not change the dimensions of the barrel, so it is inherently more accurate than chrome lining. The barrel has a 1:8 twist, which I like because I shoot mostly 55 grain, but it will handle up to 75 grain. It also has 5R rifling, which many target rifles are using now. Gives a better gas seal and higher velocity.

Smith got the 5R rifling capability when it acquired Thompson Center. It was already using the melonite treatment for the M&P pistol slides. Its website indicates that it can produce the melonite treated 5R rifled barrels for less cost than a chrome lined 6R rifled barrel and provide a wear resistant, corrosion resistant barrel that is more accurate than the standard chrome lined barrel in most AR's.

I bought a Sport a few weeks ago after much research. Three range trips and I'm very pleased. Haven't needed the forward assist yet.

I didnt read the whole thread, and got a little lost on some of the posted links... but if you want an S&W.... I've read and heard nothing but good things and had nothing but good experiences with the S&W M&P15... if thats what your after, go for it. They can be had at a good price these days and are well worth the money. S&W did a great job on those things, they shoot great, are very reliable, have some of the best parts available, and all at a great price.

Good luck with whatever you get.

i might be wrong here but the melonite treatment that you are talking about is for the exterior finish of the barrel. i have a melonite finish on my xdm but i wouldnt want that on the inside on the barrel. hard yes, smooth... not so much. even if the barrel is straight carbon steel for the m&p15 sport, and i believe it is, it will last thousands of rounds befor it need to be replaced. the OP said it will be mainly used as a corner gun that gets taken out a few times a month, at that rate a plain jane carbon barrel will last years and if it needs a replacemet options are there. another straight carbon steel barrel, stainless barrel. chrome lined, or forged steel lined barrel... they all cost about the same to replace. as a starting gun the m&p15 sport will be a good rifle to own for the purpose he has stated. as for the forward assist, it has its place, im sure it has been used in a real situation, but i'm willing to bet if we ask for a show of hands you could fit all the people that actually need it in a toyota prius

This hit it right all the way.

Melonite is a complete barrel treatment. Inside and out.

On one of my crappy M&P's the finish turned bright whitish grey after 100rds. It stayed that way. Just saying.
I personally think an AK would be a cooler corner gun than a watered down "sporter". Just my 2cents.
Edit- since when are non-swear words bleeped out?? I'm confused.
