Found a shotgun on the side of the road today, what do?

The only thing I can think of worse than the police finding your prints on a murder weapon is them finding your prints on a murder weapon you destroyed.

Police would expect to find your prints on a murder weapon if you found it and picked it up (which you should not if you find a gun randomly laying somewhere). However there are a lot of ways to tell if you were actually shooting the gun which would be more important to them. Besides even if it was used in a crime it would take rather daunting odds to link you back to such a crime, even with your prints on the weapon.

I can't help but think that one major downside of a highly mobile, Internet-loving society is that many people do not seem to have any sense of community or civic duty.

Aggravating, but in a way, predictable.

When people knew the neighbors, they seemed to behave much better.

Lucky ending.
I would not have contacted police. Most are not honest and would just keep it.
I would not post publicly anywhere. I would keep and look for the owner to post his loss then contact him. If that didn't happen, you had a new shotgun.

Most are not honest? Really?!?! Your an idiot or misinformed. Something like stealing a firearm would be a felony in the case of an Officer... And the entire department would have to be corrupt to get away with something like this.

To the OP you did the right thing in turning it in. I am glad it found it's rightful owner.

jcims, you did exactly the right thing. Good job brother.

Some of the posts in this thread are just sad. Advocating keeping someone else's property and making no effort to get it back to them. Shameful behavior.

Cops are basically corrupt thieves so why give it to them. Really? Based on what. Shameful.

jcims' actions are an affirmation of what is good and what we were all taught to be when we were just kids. Be a good citizen. Be an example to others. Be honest. Be trustworthy. Be a stand up guy. Pretty much everything we need to be good people we learn in kindergarden. We learn it there and some use it. Some don't.

I was going to say what jhenry did...so what he said.

jcims, you did the only thing an honest person would have even considered.

Some of what I read on this thread is disturbing, and some is beyond stupid. Stoopid might be more accurate.

Don't turn it in to the police cause they're all dishonest and will keep it anyway? Really?

Destroy it in case it was used in a crime and could be evidence? Really?

W T F is wrong with some people's heads?

Really? Why do you say that? Have you been to Arkansas? There are a lot of places in the country where there are a few challenges with police corruption. He may live in one of those areas where most of the police are not honest.

Take West Helena, AR for example where half the police force was either arrested or cooperating with the feds over a massive drug ring being run at the captain level.

So if he lived there would he still be an idiot? Or misinformed?

It is too easy to judge someone when you don't know what their circumstances are.

When people knew the neighbors, they seemed to behave much better.

A couple of reason for that:

1. When you found out your neighbor did something low-life, word got around to the rest of the decent people.

2...and IMO, the biggest reason, the neighbor was within walking distance.

But alas it takes all kinds I guess.

Rifleman,
You are here saying most cops are thieves but in the same breath are promoting keeping something that doesn't belong to you. What irony,eh!
Not only are you wrong, but rude and offensive. There are LEO's and family of LEO's that belong here which no doubt, you've insulted and clearly owe an apology to.

Yes, an idiot even under those circumstances. One example of one police department vs. the thousands in operation. That statement is like saying a few military guys are corrupt so they all must be.

I have been to Arkansas on several occasions and have dealings with several local LEO's who were all professional. Not to mention my former Chief retired and took a job as the Police Chief in Hot Springs. The sins on the minority does not constitute bashing the majority who do their jobs and put their lives on the line everyday.

Having grew up in a town with a population of roughly 200 people. We had one local gas station/store where I could buy handgun ammunition since I was seven years old. We. Also had three small churches.

90 percent of all those places all met under one of those four roofs every Sunday. Just to show you how respectable they are. Gossip queens and back stabing kings. Only a select few of them carry any value in there word.

I absolutely hate when some people talk about how living in a small town gives everyone this since of neighborly love. Yea I would give someone a cup of sugar but god forbid I am out of sugar I would be the talk of the town about how stuck up I am.

I am always 100 percent honest and loyal to my true friends and a select few family members. They have earned both my respect and trust ( it take years to earn either ) seconds to lose them both.

So no I would not have messed with the gun..not my problem. Call me a bad person, irresponsible, or say that I don't have any sense of brotherly love. OK :) I promise that you will not hurt my feelings.

"Most people don't realize that most of the military schools that have weapons, those weapons belong to the US military."

Yes, I knew that, but I didn't realize that it included fully automatic weapons, as well.

I went to the wrong school.

All we had were dewatted and nickel plated M1903s for the Pershing Rifles drill team

FWIW, the only gun I have ever had stolen was taken by a LEO. He had to get approval to buy it (I was a dealer at the time) from his chief. Never came back to pay and it was let known to me I had better not try to follow up on the incident.
I stick by my original post. I would keep it if the owner could not be identified.

Rifleman and Chad, once again, the actions of others are beyond our control. Our own actions define us. Apparently you define yourselves as a thief, and as somebody who feels no need to be honest with strangers, respectively.... At least, so you have both just said.

Edit: in both cases, your justification is, "well, this is how others have acted."

I hope you guys are not fathers...

+1 MLEAKE.

_____________

On another tack: It was in a case, on a road, being run over by cars and trucks. Was it undamaged? If so.............

Who makes that case and where can I get one just like it!?!?

and,

Why is the company that made it not making an ad out of your testimonial?

Inquiring minds want to know!

You let a person take merchandise from you without paying for it? I can understand you being bitter, but then again, I would have to think you would be much more upset with yourself for such a blatant blunder. You probably let the guy fill out the paperwork showing the gun was transferred to him, didn't you?

How ironic that you are so bitter about a gun not returned to you and for which you didn't receive compensation, but you are so willing to keep a gun that doesn't belong to you.

OK, this one is done. We're getting close to an area where someone is going to be very sorry for something that they've said.

jcims, good on you for doing the right thing. You can look at yourself in the mirror in the mornings and not wonder who's looking back at you.
