I was in my LGS today and found a like new condition Ruger SP101. I ended up getting it for $400. Apparently, an older gentleman purchased it for his wife, and she had trouble with the DAO trigger, so he ended up selling it back to the gun store. It looks like they maybe shot 10 rounds through it haha.

I had a SP101 about 3 years ago, and I ended up trading it away. I have been wanting another one since then to use as a carry gun when I'm out in the woods.

I am taking this SP101 down to a local shop to have it Cerakoted tomorrow. I am doing the frame in OD green, and the cylinder and controls in graphite black. It should come out looking good. I will post pics when it is done.

Here is a pic of it now-

The more I looked at pics last night of guns in OD green, the less I liked it. I am going to go with sniper gray and graphite black. I think it will look better than OD green.

Why would you cote that nice stainless finish ? When the finish wears from use it will never look as good as it does now. I know folks have different tastes. I'd pay money to keep the stainless. I'm sure the resale is much higher as is. I wouldn't pay much at all for it once cerakoted.

Obviously do what you want, but it would really hurt the resale to refinish it. Find a good functioning, holster worn, blued revolver for a lower price and refinish it (just my opinion )

I had one with the 3" barrel (and miss it so- though I visit it a couple of times a year!)...... it was LOUD, flashy, and kicked like an angry mule with full house .357's ..... I can't see using .357's out of a shorter barrel ......

We have one just like the photo by the OP. It was my wife's primary carry gun for a couple of years. I carry it on occasion.

With 38+p it is a real easy to shoot. very very manageable recoil.

The photo is the first 3 guns my wife bought for herself. The GP100 was first, followed a few weeks later by the SP-101. The SRH came a couple of years later. I guess you might say she is a fan of Ruger Revolvers...

I'm not a huge fan of the stainless finish. I don't plan on selling it, so I'm not worried about resale value. Cerakote is a very durable finish, so I'm not too worried about it wearing off anytime soon.

It's too bad Ruger doesn't offer the SP101 in black like they do the GP100. If they did, I would much rather have that over the stainless. Stainless is just to flashy for me, which is why I will have this one Cerakoted immediately.

I'm very afraid of this but hey, if you like it I like it.

Do post pictures once its done.

I'm tagging this hoping you will post pics after the Cerakote. My shop does not like to Cerakote revolvers because the blast will burn the coating. Please keep us informed on how the Cerakote hold up after some 357mag loads! BTW my SP101 is probably my favorite gun.

I don't know if the Cerakote would burn? It is a ceramic coating. The only issue I've ever heard of with Cerakote is it can flake off of soft plastic sometimes.

The shop that does my gun smithing has done a few revolvers and had bad experiences with the coating burning and will not warranty work.

It's your gun. Do what you want. I fail to appreciate how it is too "flashy" when you intend to carry it "out in the woods." In our woods fashion concerns are nonexistent.

I never said it was a fashion concern. All I did was say that I'm not a fan of stainless. Thanks for your opinion though.

When I said "flashy", I was referring to the Hindenburg sized fireball at the muzzle when using my .357 H110 loads ...... maybe "flashy" brings fashion to your mind .... fashion is just about the farthest thing from my mind ..... I was going to say when it comes to guns, but now that I think about it ....... pretty much EVER...... except when my teenaged daughter Jac yells at me or my son, telling us "YOU CAN'T WEAR THAT, YOU WALKING FASHION DISASTER!" ymmv.

I don't believe Ruger ever gave a lifetime warranty on revolvers. I know the Blackhawk I owned in the 70s didn't have one and Ruger now gives no warranty whatsoever with any of it's firearms other than what required by the state it's sold in.

This is what you find in your owners manual instead of a warranty anymore......

Sturm, Ruger & Company, Inc. has elected not to provide any written warranty, either "limited" or "full", rather than to attempt to comply with the provisions of the Magnuson-Moss Act and the regulations issued thereunder. There are certain implied warranties under state law with respect to sales of consumer goods. As the extent and interpretation of these implied warranties varies from state to state, you should refer to your state statutes.
