Former gun enthusiast turns anti...

M4, I think the person you're referring to is
Diaz (can't remember his first name). Remember, just about every pol who is supporting gun control always reassures us that he is a hunter, too. Liars.

Okay, I don't remember the source, and I don't remember all the details (I saw it on a "news magazine" about 10 years ago)...
So, take it with a grain of salt.

Apparently there was some guy who heard something go bump in the night.
He gets up, gets his gun, and goes to investigate (his first mistake: in most cases it's best to stay in your bedroom and call 911).
Goes downstairs, calls out "who's there" (second mistake: he gave up his location), and hears a noise from the front closet.

So, he goes to the closet, swings open the door and fires blindly into it. (third mistake, he fired at an unknown target)

Well, seems that his daughter or son had snuck out for some quality teen time with a "friend" and was sneaking back in.
The son/daughter died.

This guy said he'd never touch another gun again.

Like I said, I don't have any source on this, if anyone has more info I'd like to hear it.

K Frame, if he's the same guy I saw interviewed on a teevee show talking about the pros and cons of firearms, he was a man from Louisiana who did, indeed, kill his daughter, who was playing a trick on him, hiding in the closet in the middle of the night and then "jumping" out at him when he opened the door.

BUT, it was exactly the opposite, in his statements. He said he still believed in the "Right to keep and bear" arms, and would still own them.

This was seven or eight years ago, I saw the show. Maybe the same man who later changed his mind?????

Or maybe someone who had the same (????) experience? Just wondering. J.B.

There are indeed people who have gone to the Dark Side, but comparatively speaking, they're a blip. Far more antis have been converted than the opposite.

Jay, that does ring a bell.
Like I said, it was a long time ago and I was quite sure I'd mushed up the details.
Thanks! -Kframe

BTR:

"He said he was a big shooter, NRA member, owned all kinds of guns, even "assualt weapons," but finally sold them all"

Well then, his evil weapons are still out there floating around. What kind ofa good anti is that? He should have melted them, lest they jump up and shoot someone repeatedly and quickly from a concealed and dark location by a mind of their own. ;)

Oleg:

Sorry to hear you lose your girlfriend like that. ;) Actually, she has the Right not to own firearms but I hope she never plans on infringing on mine.

KFrame:

Funny, I heard that story the other day, and it supposedly happened a month ago. I guess the anti's are using revolving stories over and over. (and it looks like they are changing the facts too)

Some very interesting thoughts and experiences have been shared thus far. I thank all of you for taking the time to post them.

After reading, I AM feeling a little disheartened right now. As Coinneach mentioned, actual defections appear to be a blip. This is what I was hoping and expecting.

But that's not why I'm disturbed.

Anti's are united in their cause and philosophy - guns are bad. Period. End of discussion. No shades of gray. No wibbley wobbling.

Compare that to our divided selves - not all firearms owners are enthusiasts. The duck hunter who loves his Purdy may happily support a ban on "assault rifles."

The deer hunter who loves his Winchester 70 may not mind if handguns are declared "verbotin."

For these views, do I think of my exampled duck hunter and deer hunter as anti's? In my book - Yes. End of discussion.

I could easily go off on a rant about this, but it wouldn't be anything we haven't heard before, nor will hear again.

I enjoy trying to educate the hardcore anti's and to help guide them toward the light.

It's the anti's in our flock that give me the gray frazzles.

Michelle views guns as useful for self-defense but doesn't want to keep any around. She draws the line at self-defense against individual predators...what turned her off were the political implications of RKBA. She feels that her risk of victimization is too low to bother with guns and that the perception of a threat from official sources is paranoia.

It is her right not to own guns. She's compromised by letting me keep mine at her home (still don't feel that it is "ours") and now even plinking with her air gun inside (till it gets sold here or on ebay).

At the same time, although she's tolerant of my efforts, she had lauded such measures as NICS shutdown. Ooops...

Oleg,

First, many many compliments on your stunningly excellent (if a bit strong) web page. I've referred many people to it.

Re: Michelle

Times are very tough for those who view themselves as neutral in the gun control debate. With the constant assault of biased reporting and emotionally-charged appeals in the media and elsewhere, many have bought into at least some of the anti's agenda. Guns kill kids, etc.

The best way to combat this is to gently point out the mis-truths and remain supportive. I get the impression that you've been doing just that, and if so, keep up the good work. I see this in my own sisters; after talking about the real issues at length, they agree with the RKBA point of view. However, a week later, they're back to "why do you need a gun?" It's far too easy to forget the depths of evil that always grows out of an unarmed populace, which is why we must remain both compassionate and diligent.

I decided a long time ago not to bother with the "Michelle's" of the world.

My wife bought me a .303 Lee-Enfield No. 4 Mk I for my birthday, May 11.

Eat your hearts out!

Your story sounds similar to mine. When I married my wife, we were both anti's. I've had a (strong) change of heart/mind, but she has not. Since I swore an oath to her, till she's comfortable with a gun in the house, there will be no guns in the house.
BTW, your website is one of the reasons I switched from anti to pro. Thank you!!!

Michelle is not against guns as she views them as a morally neutral technology. She lets me keep a few in her apt. (she was there first) and lately even shoot a pellet gun inside (provided cats are locked in another room). She's against having my life revolve around guns, preparation for conflict and finds libertarian/RKBA link upsetting. "I just don't like extremists".

In all fairness, guns were a minor issue for me when I met her (my RKBA site was up but I owned none), and she's done much to adjust to the changes.

I hope that you might have guns or access to them outside of home. Training takes a long time and owning a gun is not nearly as critical as being competent with one. It will be easier to get hardware than skills if SHTF.

I took a basic safety course and I've been practicing at a local range (renting and basic practice). I realize that this is no substitute for real training and I do take the responsibility seriously. When I talk her into getting a gun or two (or more ;) ), I'll take more advanced classes, and try my darndest to get her to train, as well. She has a good attitude on self defense, and I joke to people that the reason I do Martial arts is to protect me from my wife - I think I'm joking - She just has been brainwashed that a gun in the house is going to magically kill her. I'm working on it, and may be making progress, but her reaction is not a rational one, so it is difficult to change. Which is weird, because usually she is the rational one.
