I was always the kind of guy who couldn't see the need to carry a gun, despite some run-ins and close calls with violent crime and violent individuals. I have open carried, at times, when out hunting or out hiking and fishing in the wilderness just for peace of mind since I was young and my original reason for obtaining a CPL was to make transport of firearms easier.
After I took my daughter on a camping trip which required 20 hours of driving through multiple states, plus a week of tenting it, hiking, biking and fishing in mountain lion country, the gravity of my responsibility to her really hit home in a way it hadn't before. I started to research concealed carry. When I started to look at the reasons I would not carry they were all fear-based (i.e. - *gasp* what will people think if they find out?)
The statistics for my daughter's life as a woman some day are sobering: 1 in 4 will be the victim of domestic abuse. 1 in 8 will be sexually assaulted. Those are pretty crappy odds and I want her to know it's OK for her to protect and defend herself if (perhaps when) the need arises. That modeling starts with me. So now I carry concealed. Every day. For her. For me. Because there are too many good reasons that it's a smarter choice than not.
