For all you who hate Colts...

Last week I picked up a new 45 ACP Colt "Government Model" -- really an M1991 but with the new roll marks.

The gun is SWEET!

Beautiful gun and I was VERY impressed with the fit of the barrel -- no slop.

Took it to the range tonight. Class act. Flawless functioning with 50 rounds of Speer Lawman.

7 rounds, slowfire, into 1 3/4 inches at 10 yards. If you throw out the one flyer, the group was 1 1/8 inches.

Good enough for me!!

Am I the only one who loves Colts?

:) :) :) :)

Dogger, your not the only one, I like my Colt very much, I have over 4 thousand rounds through it, and it has been very reliable.

I also recently got one of the new rollmark Colts. I also went "retro" and added a short trigger, arched housing, and wood medallion grips. Now it looks like a pseudo-Series 70.

Is the finish blue or parkerized? I got a SS one last month and it is really nice, now I want a parkerized one with the new roll mark.

Colt Hater

Looks like so far only Colt fans have checked in on this thread so perhaps I'll help the balance. Having been burnt badly not once, not twice, but three times by Colt autoloaders, I will actually have to fire one before I give them another chance. The Colt experience actually had me shooting revolvers exclusively for a couple years because I was convinced autos were not for me. A different make of 1911 eventually cured that misconception. They really look very nice in the display cases around here but I just do not trust them anymore. Then again, I have come around on Smith autos which I hated as well so who knows?

AndABeer,

I have owned a bunch of full size 1911s. One Kimber, four Springfields, two Colts. The Kimber was the most accurate of the lot but just too non-traditional for me. This current Colt is a better shooter than my four previous Springfields (one a stainless circa late 1980's, one a milspec circa early 1990s, one a milspec circa 2000, one a loaded circa 2001).

I have to say that Colt's QC is much better with this current production run. I am impressed with this gun -- it is a keeper! I am a satisfied customer.

By the way, dsk, that is a great looking gun you have!!

:)

Enjoy yer new Colt Automatic!

Count me in on the Colt lovers.

I haven't checked out the new model you are writing about but I don't think it's fair to call it a 1991 with new roll marks unless you are sure what you are saying.

All the Government Models I have and have had were a far higher level of fit and finish than the 1991A1 which was a good pistol but an entry level 45, not in the same class as a Gumt Model or Gold Cup.

Just want to compare apples with apples. :)

Colt for Me

Both of my Colt pistols have been modified by Gunsite and I'll put 'em up against any of the 1911 style autoloaders out there...100% reliable, accurate, great looking and damned fun to shoot.:)

AndABeer,

Sounds like you were buying Colts during the mid-90's. Many of those guns were indeed crap. Colt couldn't even keep the edges straight, or even the plunger tube from falling off. The front sights were often installed crooked as well. If they couldn't get the externals right, that tells you just how good they were function-wise.

The new one I have is as well made as a Series 70, possibly better. I think Colt has finally realized they need to slow down and concentrate on quality before trying to increase production.

I hear ya. Actually I'm ahead of you since last weeks gun show I went to. Couldn't resist one of the enhanced Govt's in 38 Super. It matches my 9x23..:D

I also have one of the XSE series which is really nice as well. 100% so far.. As a matter of fact I got rid of a Kimber Custom shop 45's so I could get another Colt.

If you don't mind my asking, what sort of price are those "pseudo-70's" going for? That is one sweet looking pistol!

Remember, I added the grips, trigger, and MSH housing myself. Mine was on sale ($499), but the local shop just got in some of the new ones with polished slide AND frame flats. But the price has gone up to $579.

I see what you mean...

Recently, I was looking at a brand new 2001 Gold Cup my local dealer had. When compared to my 2000 Gold Cup, you could tell real easy that the fit and finish was a lot better. Edges lined up closer and it was much tighter.

I ended up contacting Colt the next day and then sending the gun in for adjustment. I figure they did a few hundred dollars worth of repairs on it at least. Including giving me new slide along with new front and back sights. They even refinished the frame to fix the idiot scratch (slide release- 3/4 inch long in the bead blasted area) that I put on it. Came back a month later with a manual and new 8 round mag. Did I mention, that it was free!!

Sure, it doesn't really excuse that it was shipped in that condition to begin with. But, I was very happy with the manner they addressed my concerns and in the end I was satisfied with the results.

At 30 feet it was grouping like it should have at 25 yards and it worked with ball ammo. WOW I am so impressed! (dripping with sarcasim)
