For all of you NC CCWs

Where the heck can you carry in NC? According to the law there aren't many places where you can legally carry. Here is how the law reads as far a places where CC is not permitted:

Schools, public or private, all levels including universities. This also applies to all property owned by any school.

Assemblies and establishments where admission was charged.

Assemblies and establishments where alcohol is both sold and consumed.

State Capitol Building, the Executive Mansion, the Western Residence of the Governor, or on the grounds of any of these buildings, and any building housing any court of the General Court of Justice.

State office buildings or any portion of a building in which there’re State offices.

Law Enforcement or Correctional Facilities.

Financial Institutions.

Events Occurring in Public: It shall be unlawful for any person participating in, affiliated with, or present as a spectator at any parade, funeral procession, picket line, or demonstration upon any private health care facility or upon any public place owned or under the control of the State or any of
its political subdivisions to willfully or intentionally possess or have immediate access to any dangerous weapon.

Areas of emergencies or riots.

Where notice of carrying a concealed handgun is prohibited by the posting of a conspicuous notice or statement.

Some of it makes sense, but some of it is just plain silly. I sure would like to have a handgun in an emergency or riot!

In the day to day life it's not as bad as it looks. I live in SC (border) and have reciprocal for NC. On an average daily life I don't go to the restricted listings. In fact, SC & NC are very good about not having restrictions in stores, shopping malls, etc. I never seen a restriction in any store, and my wife shops a lot.:D

A lot of those restrictions are normal for most states.

While I was stationed in NC, I was suprized by the some of the carry laws there myself. If you're new to NC I'd suggest going over their laws (which it looks like you're doing ;)) as this one: "Assemblies and establishments where admission was charged." I learned the hard way when I carried into a movie theater. :o After that I brushed up on their laws myself. :)

Having said that about NC, I must say SC is better for CCW. We have the Castle Law and such.

I have had CCW in four states. I have seen some that many private stores...just normal shopping, restrict guns. NC is not the best, but it's not the worse.:)

I'm originally from southeastern N.C. I was always puzzled by how harsh some of their gun laws are for a Southern state. Having to go to the county sherriff to get a permit to buy a handgun? That always seemed like an unnecessary (potentially intimidating) step.

I forgot about that one. Yeah, that's not good. In SC all I have to do is show my CCW license and walk out the door. Now if I buy one in NC just across the border then my local SC FFL just gets in his car and makes the 20 minute trip.

NC CWP

Does the OP hold a NC permit? All these items should be covered in the training course. The restriction on schools is a federal law.
North Carolina is a Castle Doctrine state and has a stand-your-ground law.
NC permit is also a permit to purhase a handgun, and exempts the holder from the NCIS check for any firearm purchase. Federal law only allows handgun purchase in the state of your residence and NC law requires permit even for "private" purchase, seller beware.
NC reciprocates with more states than SC, which does not reciprocate with Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi.
Your permit number is your driver's license number, always show your permit to law enforcement first thing, you can be charged if you do not, and lose your permit as well.

Check the link below, should clear up a lot of things.

There are lots of threads on the purchase laws, but I can purchase from mail order from yet another state or just across the line in NC and have it sent to a SC FFL. Because I am a SC resident I don't need the private purchase permit....just send it to SC FFL.

That's good news. I guess I am not up to date like I should be and I go into NC about every day. I knew they were working on the bill, but it looks like it passed. Now I have the Castle Doctrine as I go back and forth between NC & SC.:)

And about ten years ago, they did not allow carry into National Forests. So, they have changed somewhat. Which surprised the heck out of me when a forest ranger noted my handgun.

He pulled up behind my Jeep as I was pulling off the lug nuts of a flat rear left tire, and I had my jacket off with my handgun on my right strong side. He saw the handgun first, and actually very nicely, stated North Carolina does not allow the carry of handguns, with or without a permit into a National Forest. (National Forests follow state laws, just like BLM). When I stood up and faced him, he noted a badge, asked for ID, and then we sat around and BS'ed about working for Uncle Sam.:D

That was the first state that issued concealed permits, that I have ever heard made it illegal to carry into a National Forest. But honestly, I never really paid that much attention to state handgun laws.:D

Since when? I always thought there was no CD and a duty to retreat. Can you give me a link to the specific paragraph in NC gun law that verifies this. I'm not trying to challenge your statement, just wanting to affirm that, since I travel to NC from SC often. Thanks!

Perhaps during a riot you should stay at home and not become part of the problem?

Unless you get caught up in a riot like I did in the late 60s in New Haven Connecticut, or in Harlem in the middle 60s.

NC is a great place to live, just ask the 10's of thousands of people who have moved here in the past decade.

Yes it is. I have been here for 35 years and I have no plans to leave.

Hmmm... my wife applied to the Ph.D program at Chapel Hill; I did not know that the laws were so restrictive! No movie theaters? That's ridiculous.

Although, NC is far more gorgeous than boring, hot, flat Texas. It might be worth it.

cwpinsc and madog Do your self a favor and do your own search and you will see that nc does have it own CD laws on the books . Just a bit of lazy research took me all of two minutes to verify. I too am a nc ccw holder and moved here from fl 11 years ago and the laws there at that time were very close to the same we have here now. Like also covered ,more states will respect our ccw than sc's version. For what thats worth.
Wrother most theaters now sever beer and it is a meeting place of a sort.

Do yourself a favor and read my name.....madmag....not madog. But since you did your lazy search you could have posted the link so we would not have to do our lazy search.:(
