FMJ 308 factory ammo - what's good?

For what? Makes a difference.
There is no 'best' anything. Especially ammo.
If you're not reloading, you must try a box of as many brands as you can to find the ammo your rifle shoots best. The price of that ammo means nothing.
 
I'm gonna go with that there are more good or quality brands of FMJ ammo then there are bad.

So far a lot of good suggestions. Personally I like anything by Federal. But any U.S. made commercial ammo is fine. That's not to knock the foreign brands. Privi and anything out of Israel is going to work well for you.

The OP mentioned good ammo for the price versus accuracy. I did not see anything about precision. If you want to spend a mint on ball ammo then GMM or black hills would be for you. I don't really see the point. There are a lot of good suggestions here.

For the record I have seen Privi 168 HP's shoot just as well as Federal GMM 168's. It just depends on what your rifle prefers and who is behind it. You have to find what works for your situation.

I don't disagree with you.
But, I interpreted the OP's question of what's "best", literally.

The two I mentioned are loaded to precision tolerances, while none of the others mentioned, are.

Accuracy is consistency from the hardware and the shooter- and these are known to be extremely consistent, with the best of handloads, and are known to shoot well (accuracy node) from most any rifle.

Doesn't mean a given stick won't shoot something better- but I still say you'd be very hard pressed to find any rifle that'll shoot "assembly line" factory ammo as well as the precision ones. There's a reason the industry uses these for their testing.

Accuracy comes at a price. For many, 1/4 m.o.a. may not be worth the cost.
 
BTW... the OP asked about FMJ ammo... the match ammo is generally HPBT isn't it???

for .308... I've been buying 500 rd cases of PRVI to get 500 good reloadable matching lot number cases ( though I've personally been buying PSP bullets ) but they also sell FMJ bullets

why buy loaded ammo for the brass??? this is something I just started doing... I've been trying to build up a supply, because of recent shortages... I've already run into the issues of handloads after a person dies, as a portion of our collection we inherited from MRS dad... I'ved also personally cracked a cylinder on a 44 special revolver with handloads he may have loaded, or got from someone else long ago... so I figure if I wanted... say 1000 cases for a particular gun, I'll put 700 loaded factory rounds at the bottom / back of the self, & reload the other 300 or so as needed, that way I have a reloadable supply of brass & ammo, that are not handloads in case I should die... if / when I wear out my 300 cases, I'll buy some new ammo to put on the bottom / back of the shelf, & shoot up the next 300 or so & start reloading those :)

Fair question.

I do know the Sierra OTM's (open tip match) are used by the U.S. Military in the
M118LR (175 grain .308) and I believe the 77 grain Sierra is also used in the 5.56 for DM's. I'm sure other ballistic open tip bullets are used elsewhere.

This means they're still considered FMJ's- not hollow points- as they would be banned under the Hague Convention otherwise.

There is NO way to make an accurate suggestion. Every barrel is different. My R700 .308 Varmint did NOT like FGMM , yet responded very accurately to Black Hills match ammo. You need to experiment and document it's the only way.
 
My most accurate is Federal Gold Medal match 168 GR.
Best value would be Privi Partizan 147 GR.
The best price I ever got was Australian 147 GR Ball in cases of 800 rounds,
Cans of 200, bandoliers of 50.
A few years back I bought a good bit of it at .08 round.
Still have about 16 cases in my stash.
 
When I first got my .308 I tried severall brands of match ammo, FGMM, Black Hills, and none seemed to be consistently moa or better. Granted they shot more consistent than bulk but the accuracy I observed was not worth upwards of $38+ per 20 rounds. Didn't take long for me to realize the benefits of handloading. With 168 SMK's and W748 powder I'm consistently at about .5 moa at 200 meters. As for factory ammo, my R700 Varmint seemed to shoot the 150 gr Rem Core Lokt pretty well.
