Flying with Handguns

An old thread ...

I've been reading on TSA's site and on my Airline's website about flying with a handgun.

United's website makes no specific mention of the case being double locked, just:

The firearm must be packaged in a hard-sided container capable of being locked. The container must be locked and the key or combination must remain in the customer's possession. If a hard-sided container is needed, see the container section of this site.

And TSA's site says:

The container must be locked. A locked container is defined as one that completely secures the firearm from being accessed. Locked cases that can be pulled open with little effort cannot be brought aboard the aircraft.

I have an old Haliburton camera case that has a single combination lock and cannot "easily" be seperated on the ends without some sort of substantial prying tool.

It's subjective, but gfor those of you who know Haliburton cases, they are meant to make the contents secure.

Think I'm good to go?

I would prefer not to have to purchase yet another case. This is a one-time and one-way flight.

And yes, I've checked all the local gun laws to make sure I can have this gun at my destination.

As a practical mater, most pistol cases are small and portable.

Having them inside a larger suitcase is at least some concealment of what the contents are.

Bought a police trade-in Glock 23,so no deep feelings for it if lost.Have a lock- able steel case i bought from Sportsman guide, with the cable that goes around seat supports.Last time we flew i pop riveted a d-ring to the inside of my suitcase, with supports on both sides.Locked hardcase luggage, with a stronger tsa lock, and bright orange so i know when my bag comes down the chute.
Had to fly two different airlines to Arizona, one was efficient, one had no clue to what they were doing.
