Florida Assault Weapon Ban

Anyone bent on murder will find a means, how would a free society keep a violent person from harming others?
There is no way to keep people from harming others. We know this is true because even in prison, where freedoms are curtailed far beyond what any normal person would find reasonable, people still find ways to hurt, even kill, each other.

The bottom line is that some people will misuse what freedoms they have to do things that society finds unacceptable. A society that attempts to prevent violence by eliminating freedoms will eventually find that even when everyone is effectively a prisoner, violence still continues.

We just have to do SOMETHING! Even if it has no effect?

"We've got to do SOMETHING" is a veritable mantra for the gun grabbers. I haven't been able to find it again but, a few years ago, I stumbled across a video on Youtube of a meeting of a city council or county board of commissioners or some such governing body. On the agenda was a proposed anti-gun law the body wanted to enact.

A member of the audience stood up and reminded the members of the legislative body that the state had a preemption law with respect to firearms, so any new law they passed would be null, void, and unenforceable. One of the members of the board then stated, very sincerely, that he didn't care if the law couldn't be enforced because [get ready, here it comes] "We've got to do SOMETHING!"

If anyone knows the video to which I am referring, please send me a PM with the link so I can bookmark it.

Or post the link right here in the thread and lots of us will bookmark it.

Do you remember if it was the Pittsburgh City Council...there seems to be several Youtube videos about them doing this...passing city laws even though there is a state law that says they cannot do this.

One of my favorite videos is the Mark Robinson "I'm the majority!" video.

It might have been Pittsburgh, but I somehow don't think so. It was several years ago, so I know it predated the current efforts of the City of Pittsburgh by a fairly considerable span of time. My admittedly fuzzy recollection is that the room was smaller and the setup a bit less formal than I would think one might find in Pittsburgh. Dunno.

I hope someone can find the link because it offers a classic insight into the "We've got to do SOMETHING!" mentality. Never mind that the "something" is totally illogical and won't (can't) have any effect on the [perceived] problem, it's all about appearing to have "taken some action."

it doesn't matter, its not THEIR money!!

Some years back Seattle city council decided they needed to pass a "law" prohibiting civilian CCW on city property (parks, etc.)

Didn't matter that the city's lawyers TOLD them that they didn't have the legal authority to do it. They did it anyway.

And, they got taken to court...
And, they lost.

but what the hell, it wasn't their money, only the taxpayers money...

You can find references to a "well-regulated drawing room," "well-regulated machine shop," "well-regulated school," "well-regulated society," "well-regulated government," and I've heard (but not seen) "well-regulated hairstyle" in the writings of the 1700s and 1800s., going all the way up to 1900.
