fixed power scope question

I use a fixed power 6X Burris Signature on my 25-06. I had a fixed 4X power Nikon on a 30-30 and gave the rig to my son-in-law (don't miss the gun but should have kept the scope). Both were/are excellent on the guns they are mounted on. Of the two I like the 6X better.

fixd powers

I started with fixed 4x, cause that was the norm, went to 3x9 with everybody else, and now have stated looking at 6x fixed. I've not switched back exclusively to fixed power scopes on hunting rifles (read deer for me) but I have several favorites that wear Leupold 6x36mm and a couple more that wear 2.5x, and do all I've ever needed them to do.

It seemed that I kept my 3x9's on 6x most of the time anyhow. On several occasions, after a shot, long or close, I'd look and the dial was on 6x. At that point I began to think fixed power again.

As far as price goes, the Burris 6x40mm seems an affordable scope. Cheaper than the Leupold 6x36 and 6x42 too. I'm believing tougher than than the various import variables as well.

For me its a parts thing too. Fewer parts just seems to mean less moving parts and more durability, equals less to go wrong.

Personally, I find the low end of a variable power scope more beneficial than the high end. With some of the deer hunting around here, a deer may be 5 yards away under a tree stand. A fixed 6x or even 4x may not provide a wide enough view to tell if you're aiming at the vitals or the rump. Waiting for the deer to move farther away may mean letting it get behind cover and never seeing it again.

As another example, I stepped outside one night to shoot some raccoons that were causing trouble in the yard. Even a 4x magnification was too high, making the field of view too small. By the time I got them in my sights, they were already making a break for it.

For these reasons, I like something I can set at 2x. For my purposes, a 2-7x is more practical than a fixed 4 or 6 or a variable 3-9.

The old steel tube Weavers, K2.5 and K4 are great fixed power scopes and readily available on the used market, some in like new condition. Unertl's are great and the Lyman "all weather" is a great old scope. I use 2.5, 3.5 and 4X to shoot to 200yds with ease.
