Fixed blade needed

I'm shopping around for a reasonable priced fixed blade for everyday carry. I live in Texas, it has to be under 5.5 inches. I really want a 4 inch or shorter that is more utility than weapon. No serrated blades. I want to use this knife, so it needs to be cheap enough to be replaced if lost/stolen/broken. I don't use a knife for a pry bar, but in an emergency a strong knife would be good.

Have I asked for too much?

Phil

The first one that comes to mind is the Graham Razel by Columbia River. Check out the smaller one. You can certainly pry with this knife. Buy an original from the Grahams and they guarantee them for ever. They have a web site. It is quite a handy knife even though it is unusual in its design.

I like a quality knife and a recent purchase really impressed me, the Buck Vanguard. They have versions from plain to fancy and they're all beautiful and well made. They start at around $50 and go up from there. I bought the basic rubber grip version for myself.

* 420HC steel blade
* 8 1/2" long overall
* 4 1/8" long blade
* Drop point blade
* Rubberized handle with satin-finish brass butt and guard
* Heavy-duty black nylon sheath
* 6 3/5 ozs.

I got a knife from Harbor Freight that was actually free that is an incredibly good knife. I got like a $8 coupon that could be used for anything and I ordered the knife which was about that price. It has a cutting edge on the top side of the blade that extends back about 3 inches. The blade is 5 1/2 inches long I think.

It was made in El Salvador from surgical stainless steel. The brand name is Macasa. It has the Control HRc hole test for hardness. For such a cheap knife it is really amazing. The handle is excellent too. The only problem I had with it was that it kept cutting through the canvas sheath they send me with it.

You'd be hard pressed to find a better value in a knife but whether or not you can still get those same knives from Harbor Freight is another question.

I second this. Great knife (mine is the version with the game zipper) and I'm surprised at how well this knife holds an edge.

I would have recommended the Buck 119 Special for $35 at walmart, but you need a knife thats 5.5 in. or less. Great knife, tho.

Ka Bar TDI line (any)

Buck Vanguard (any)

Spyderco Moran drop point

Spyderco Perrin Street Beat (although much more expensive than the others, at around $120)

CRKT Ryan Plan B (these were discontinued, but can still be found for $25-30)

Yeah, nice knife. The only thing that does not thrill me about is is the sheath. I keep threatening to get Bob Dozier to make one for me if it is possible. His Sheath A would be perfect.

I was going to mention Mora, I see Fisherman66 already provided the link. I don't have one, but I have read a ton of good reviews on bladeforums and some survival/bushcraft sites.

EDIT: For $20 total, I've got one on the way right now. :)

Finland made knives are surprisingly affordable. This is likely your best option for price + quality steel.

Boker started out as a German firm with Soligen steel. But within past few years, many of their large knives are made in China. Pricing is quite affordable.

I still carry my older Ka bar USMC fighting knife when I backpack into the Bighorn Mts. But it is quite large for ordinary cutting tasks.
