First week carrying

tophe, thanks for the review its been a while since my ccw class, I still like to prevent showing wenever possible, I do seem to recall something about needing to conceal or have your pistol readly open to view, so your not supposed to a IWB holster with with your shirt tucked behind it, am I correct or am I misrembering?

Your state should have a website with the regulations available for your reference. The best thing is to read them yourself, then you have first hand knowledge. Inadvertently breaking a firearm law can be pretty serious.

Virginia is a preemption state so localities can't pass laws more restrictive than state law regarding purchase, possession or carry. Cities/counties in Michigan may be different and you'll need to know your local laws as well as state.

I'd suggest you stop by opencarry.org. Although primarily oriented to open carry they have a Michigan forum where the members will gladly help you out and provide links to Michigan firearm laws, and other resources.

i file for mine day after tomorrow, so i'll have it in 45 days or less. my sister, also. we're pretty anxious to get them. crime in our city is rediculous. this morning, i almost ran out of gas on my way to work because i go in at 4 am, and i refuse to stop at me neighborhood gas station that time of night. even pulling in at work is nerve racking, as i'm the first one there.

Congrats on your first week of carrying.

And yes it is legal to open carry in Michigan. Also as a CPL holder you can only enter certain places while OCing, such as the CEZ. If OC is something you want to know more about you should check out the Michigan section of http://opencarry.mywowbb.com/ It is a great source of information.

Some times it feels like everyone is looking at me and I get self concious about having it on me,

As long as yr legal dnt worry about it. Having yr gun at the moment of truth is more important than the fickle opions of the average american sheeple

Congrats on your first week!

Don't worry about thinking everyone is looking at you; we all went through that :-)

Just forget about it and soon you won't give it a thought. Most people wouldn't notice it if they saw it anyway, especially since people carry all sorts of stuff on their belts these days.

I've been carrying for almost a year now... Can't say I ever felt uneasy/concerned about other people noticing my gun... It's perfectly normal and common for people to carry here, along with a pro-gun political climate up here... Makes for generally hassle-free carry, whether open or concealed... Just one more reason to love Alaska...

Thanks for all of the support and great advice, the TFL has been great! :D

I am more comfortable now already. It is a good feeling just knowing I have it and even more so every time I watch the news. I truley hope that I never have to draw it, but I do plan to continue to train and stay aware of my surroundings. I will be prepared if that day comes.

It depends on more than the law.

Too many postings have touched on the question of "What kind of trouble can follow when I carry?" for me to credit all of them.

While public perception holds sway, even perfecly legal carry carries risks it oughtn't.

August 2008 Brad Krause was arrested at gunpoint in West Allis, Wisconsin while planting trees in his yard. There apparantly was not even a complaint, but a neighbor who called police (according to his testimony in court) to inquire if carrying a gun in a holster was legal. No complaint. Just a question.

The charges were eventually dropped, but when he got his gun back it was covered with some kind of fingerprint detection chemical (I have not been able to find out how bad it is, but I suspect the finish and grips are ruined).

Can you spell "abuse of police power"? Louisiana and New Orleans police confiscated means of self defense during Katrina's reign. A Pennsylvania sheriff voided a woman's concealed carry permit because she carried openly iin public (legally) (warm weather clothing see thread
http://concealedcarryforum.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=6767 )

In a small town in Texas, the local PD used to harrass people who carried. That is, until they put the mayor's (remarried) grandmother face down in the street for having a gun. A perfectly legal gun, legally carried and without probable cause for anything.

Texas, Louisiana, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania are not the only places where this sort of nonsense happens.

It can happen anyhere.

My apologies to all the good, honest, upstanding police in the world, this is not intended to smear law enforcement. I just point out that a tiny percentage of bad apples can do a tremendous amount of damage, especially if they have a badge and even more so if they have pips on their collars or esq. behind their names.

It has been about 2-3 for me with my P345 in 3 different holsters! a Bianchi, a federal arms, and a simply rugged. Last one wins. I was in the paranoid stage as well asking constantly "can you tell?..." Then I got over it.
Many trips to walmart will make you comfortable. That is how I got over it. Literally shopping around, going to movies, stuff like that. Hope you carry it everywhere. I am a skinny guy, so IWB is great.
