First time mounting scope.

I have a Rem 700 new out the box and just had my new scope, a BSA Platinum rifle scope come in. It didnt come with rings and the rifle doesnt have a rail or anything. My question is; what type of rings do I need to get and do the rings fit right on the rifle?

Thanks!

The rifle should be drilled and tapped on the receiver for bases and rings. You didn't state what size scope you had so I am going to assume it is a 3x9x40 and you would probably want medium height rings and a good base to go along with. I have had good luck with leupold rings and bases. Good luck with your search, plenty of good info from guys here will steer you in the right direction. And tell us the size of your scope so we can tell right. Later

I agree with the Leupold (2-pc. rings and bases). I've bought some other brands and been extremely disappointed with them AND they are much harder to put on. One option I was considering was the ONE PIECE Remington 700 rings shown here.... total cost for Remington mounts $32.

Leupold rings bases... total cost $45...

When you bolt the bases to the receiver use a drop of Loktite on the screw. Tighten carefully, put the allen wrench in the head and tap the wrench with a small hammer. This usually lets you get it a little tighter. They won't ever loosen doing it this way. And make sure you get the high one on the back and get them in the right direction. Sounds dumb but easy to do wrong. Not they I've ever done it wrong but you know.....

They should only be torqued "snug". Do not try to get them "real tight". Screws vibrate loose. The Loctite keeps them from vibrating loose. DO NOT USE RED LOCTITE. USE THE BLUE LOCTITE. If you use the red Loctite, you'll have the devil of a time ever removing them. Red is basically a permanent epoxy. Blue is for studs, bolts, etc. to keep them from vibrating loose. Too many garage gunsmiths think you need to crank the snot out of the screws to keep them from coming loose. You don't. Remember, snug and blue loctite. I've never had one come loose yet and I've done hundreds of scope mounts over the years (I'm really old). Have fun.

The best rings I've used by far are the Burris Signature Zee rings, and I've used a few sets of Leupolds and others. With the Burris rings, no need to lap the rings, no need to worry about ring marks, and if you have misalignment issues which hopefully you don't, but it will work to fix those. If you need to shim the scope you can just change the inserts. IMO these rings are the ones to go with, but it's your gun and your choice as to what you do go with.

sound advice. I bought some blue loctite precisely because I didn't want to have to use a blow-torch to get the bolts off should something go wrong

I'm going to offer an alternative that I've found to be really good. Weaver Grand Slam bases and Weaver 6 Screw Tactical Rings. They look pretty mean and spread the grip/hold over a larger portion of the scope tube unless you have to slide the scope way back to gain eye relief. X10 on the Blue Loctite.

Don't be surprised if that BSA scope doesn't hold zero well after a box or two of ammo. Every once in a while you'll hear someone say that their BSA is still going strong. However, those people are few and far between. Most people will tell you that BSA stands for Been Suckered Again.

No instructions for mounting the scope were in the manual. I went by the reviews that I found on different sites and all were really positive.

I was in the swfa site and looked at the reviews on all their scopes and not one bad review. Hard to find a place with some real reviews.

I can understand how its hard to rate something just because other people are saying its great. The negative ratings might have just been deleted or not accepeted when posted. I'll have to see for myself.

well my BSAs are still going strong and holding in there with leupolds and nikons

but of corse i dont put them on mags just 223s and such
