Te 270 is one hell of a rifle. However, you are stuck with 150 grain bullets max. Why not buy a 30/06 and increase bullet weights to 220 grains. Shooting up to 150 grain bullets in either caliber the recoil difference is slight. However, the 220 will thump quite Hard. The 30/06 is truly an one gun caliber.

I have a number of buddies that live in western states like Colorado, Wyoming, etc. who are fired up about me getting into hunting that are already planning hunts for me. They have told me that there are situations where I will be potentially taking longer shots (>300 yards). I was thinking (and again, I'm a newbie so this might be wrong) that having a flatter shooting, higher velocity round might be a smart move.

Thanks for the feedback. I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Flat Shooting LR

Okay, I just checked the Remington Shoot calculator.

A .270 loaded with 130 gr corelokts and zeroed for 200 yds will drop approx 7 inches at 300 yds.

A .30-06 loaded with 150 gr corelokts and zeroed for 200 yds will drop approx 8 inches at 300 yds.

Now since you are looking for a rifle and perhaps a caliber, I owned a Weatherby Vanguard in .270 Win, and a T/C Venture in .30-06. Both rifles have 24 inch barrels and both shoot sub moa if I do my job. The recoil of the .270 with 130 gr bullets is only slightly less than the recoil from the .30-06 with 150 gr bullets. Now I love both rifles, but if I could only own one rifle for everything, it would be the .30-06 caliber because I can easily find and load bullets from 110-220 grain.

For most big game in North America, the kill zone is 8 inches.

Enjoy your shopping and hunting no matter what you choose......

I think the 30-06 is more versitile than the .270 which is a fine caliber but you can cover alot more bases with the 06. I reload a 150gr. sierra gameking at nearly 3000fps. I could also shoot up to 220gr. bullets which would make me feel better if I was shooting a bear. Good rifles that wont break the bank.... T/C Venture- good gun with a great trigger and a moa guarantee. Remington SPS, Ruger M-77. Hope this helps.

While you are at it check out the new Winchester Model 70 -- quite a rifle. You will find nothing but praise for these new Winchesters coming out of FN. If I had $1500 I wouldn't hesitate to get a Model 70 Supergrade or a Featherweight Stainless. .270 is a great caliber and is available pretty much everywhere. A similar round but with the benefit of a short action is the 7mm-08.

Buzzcock - Thanks for that input. I was wondering about barrel length.

Prometheus - .408??? Is that for real? Doesn't a .408 have twice the recoil or more of a .270?

Not when fired from the Cheytac M200, you know as well as anyone that recoil is completley dependant upon the weapon. Its a joke though, that rifle would cost you tens of thousands.

Yeah, if you are gonna change the game on the guy to be just a North America, including Canada and Alaska, hunting rifle I'd go (sitting down?)...

... .30-06 Ackley Improved.
