First Revolver?

A Smith Model 617 comes to mind. Ten shots of relatively cheap .22 rimfire ammunition from a revolver that is known for its accuracy and fine build/finish quality. I wouldn't be without one.

All depends on what you like, you could get probably 50+ different kinds of revolvers in that price range. Maybe it would be better for you to select a handfull of what you like and make a poll and ask why one over another. I love my ruger new vaquero in .357. Absolutely fun, single action and cheap. Also you have to find not really what its only gonna be used for, but what its main role is. A fun gun like mine can be used for HD, not the best but really, slim odds of it happening and hopefully you only need one shot. Besides that I feel very proficient as I use it in pin shooting league and Cowboy Action. Other people might say its not enough. Let me tell you, I feel 100% confident in myself and my weapons and wish my capabilities on no one who tries to brake in. Besides the point this is obviously not a Conceiled weapon. You could find all of the above but the capabilities of a revolvers usefullness are basically limitless, I dont care what your Hi-Cap lovers say. Your revolver can do ANYTHING you want it too... besides going to "war" and really NO handgun will be adequate enough.

Have fun.

I think a 686 or a gp100 would be great. Can shoot sa or da. 357 or 38 specials. Easy to find lots of different ammo for. Good caliber for many uses.

Thanks for all the suggestions...I'm going to have to poke around the gun shops/shows and see which ones I like the most. The S&W Model 10 from Buds is tempting to get my feet wet...I have also been considering the Ruger LCR .357/.38

For $800 you could get a nice 22 revolver as well as a centerfire. Or one gun with lots of ammo.

I'd say get a Ruger Single Six and a Smith and Wesson Model 10. That is a combo that is almost impossible to beat for a beginner shooter. I'm not a beginner but those two get more range time than anything else.

I started out with a 3" Sp101 in 357. I took me a year or so to master shooting such a small gun I would highly recommend the 4"GP100, great weapon. Also, everybody has to have a .22. Big heavy load are cool but get old and cost lots of money, but you can shoot a 22 all day for 10 bucks!
