first revolver for semi-auto guy

Find someone who will let you handle a Smith Model 19 or a Smith Model 27.

If the 19 doesn't beg you to take it home, the 27 will.

The 19 is the perfect size.

The 27 has the perfect "feel".

Or is that the other way around? :D

Rugers DA revolvers are decent, but lack personality IMHO.

As the saying goes..."Rugers are tools, Smiths are jewels."
 
I'll second/correct RogerC's mention of the 19. The 19 has the "feel". I haven't had a chance to try a 27, but my new M66 4" (stainless steel version of M19) has really grabbed my attention as just one very fun gun.

Manuvers like an extension of your hand.
