First Handgun

The Ruger GP100 would be a great first gun for your purposes.

It is a bit large and heavy for a carry weapon, but you did state that you would only be carrying maybe once or twice a month.

The GP100 is a fantastic range handgun....very accurate and very easy to shoot.
The weight and grip really tames the recoil of even the hottest .357 mag loads...which also makes the GP100 a great defensive revolver.

Best of all it's very affordable.

Interesting that you mention the Ruger G100. That was the handgun that the clerk at Sportsman's Warehouse reccomended to me when I was doing some window shopping. I'll definatly give that a try provided my range has one for rent.
