First Handgun

When you said there is only a $100 difference in the two I couldn't believe it. I thought the 617 woul be $200 to $250 more.

But anyway my point is, if there is only a one hundred dollar difference between the two pistols - I personally would say the 617 is then a better value. If I had a choice between the two and I only had to pay $100 more for the 617 - I'd get the 617 in a heartbeat.

I have a Mark II and a Mark III. I have let a lot of new shooters shoot them. I also have a J frame Smith in 22 with a 4 in barrel. I use that or my Ruger Single six to train with a revolver.
After much searching and much patience I found a early K-22 that I intend to shoot alot this summer. 1948 with a 6 inch barrel. The gentleman I bought it from bought it used in 1951. He sold it to me because he wanted it to go to someone who was going to shoot and enjoy it as much as he did.
Later this month I will get to buy his 38 combat masterpiece that is a match to the K-22. He bought that gun in 1958.

Like so many others have said decide if you want a revolver or a semi-auto. You will enjoy many years with either.

Here's what happened with my pistol progression.

My first firearm was a Ruger Mk III 22/45 4". It jammed on everything but round nose bullet profiles. Ruger sent me a new bolt (why, I don't know) and of course it didn't fix the issue and after doing some research I sold it and picked up a Mk II 22/45 6" stainless. It shot great, no issues at all except it was extremely top heavy. Really got boring after a while.

Long story short I bought my CZ 75BD and a Kadet 22 kit for it. I much prefer this gun to any other 22 handgun I've tried, including revolvers and other semiautos.

I am leaning for a Ruger MK lll 5.5 inch bull barrel because it has a much more attractive price lol. Finding a MKll at a good price is hard if not impossible. But from what I read the mag disconnect is easily dealt with or just get a pac-lite putter down the road for the chamber indicator.

But first my Garand has to sell (please see post in the rifle sale section :D )...

Could not agree more, though this outfit will set you back close to a grand, but you end up with the equivalent of 2 pistols.

My first gun purchase was a used Ruger Single Six convertible that I bought from a fellow soldier for $60 in 1972. Still have it, still love to shoot it.

I have recently been coveting a BuckMark or 22/45 just for fun too, so I am just like you and want lots of .22's.
