First Handgun!?!?

I would look long and hard at a full size CZ with the Kadet conversion unit.
You learn to shoot with that, when you make the transition to center fire
everything is familiar.

Hesitant to jump in, but I've shot 600 lb pigs and 2000 lb bulls with the 22. Ever been shot with one, me either, and I don't want to be. No not the ideal S.D. round but if the B.G. is amped enough to ignore a gun ,then enough to ignore a hit with a 22, then he is probably amped enough to ignore a hit with anything that doesn't shut him down. Are you sure the 9 or the 45 will do that, better odds, yes but are you sure you can hit that spot.If I were a B.G the weapon I would not like to meet is the one that the owner can use. a shot to the brain pan with any weapon will stop things, even without a brain shot a whack to the head will turn off a lot of things,if the bad guy is on top of you ,you already screwed up and it probably doesn't matter what you have, your in trouble. My first handgun was a 44 mag,not for B.G.s but for large harry critters. I soon realized that I couldn't practice enough to be good enough for bad situations,so I got a 22. And I shoot hundreds of rounds through it. For bear drills I shoot close, draw and shoot, at least 100 rnds before I break out the 44.Does that guarantee I'll stop a bear, no , but I'm willing to bet it ups my odds. The more you shoot the more comfortable you are.And i for one don't want to come up against any human that is truly comfortable with the gun in their hand regardless of cal. I'll recomend a Ruger GP100 in a 4" Stainless 357.
Start by shooting 38 specials in it, and work up from there. Great gun, and will last FOREVER. (Rugers are really well built).

A lot of folks will recomend semi autos, but for a first gun, I'd go with a revolver for sure. I have a lot of nice semi autos, but there is somthing about a nice simple revolver that is just "timeless".

Ruger Single Six. While the .22 is not a true self defence caliber, the .22 is great for a beginner. Still, I'd hate to be looking down the barrel of a .22 pointed between my eyes.... The Single Action is a good place to start too as it is much safer to shoot than any semi-auto (Personally I'd never recommend a semi auto for first training gun) .... Also the .22 Long is plenty accurate, cheap to shoot (read lots of practice!), not much muzzle jump (not worry about the 'flinch') and not real noisy either. You'll learn 'a lot' about shooting with this gun.... Once you are comfortable with that gun, then go for a center fire for your defence weapon. The .357 GP-100 is a good place to start as stated above. For home defence (read infrequent use), I think it is better than spray and pray with the semi-autos in my opinion. Shooting one round accurately is better than a 18 going 'somewhere' down range.... Of course if you really want a good defence weapon ... buy a shotgun...
