(mumbling obscenities) dang interstate commerce clause. I'd rather not pay what my dealer would tack on (he's a family friend and a great guy but his prices are the highest in town) if I could avoid it but it looks like there is no avoiding that.
I haven't read thru all the threads, so excuse the repeat(if it is).
This gun will be an HD (not CCW... that would be difficult with either) and collection starter gun. I've already got two semi rifles (AK and 10/22) and a 20ga youth shotgun (500c in mossy oak w/ fiberoptic sights), the next logical steps for me are a handgun, 12ga, and a bolt action rifle (Enfield No.4 Mk1 or Nagant?... maybe another thread another day).
Wow... Seems hard to believe this could be the case with any modern weapon, but especially on a basic design that has had almost 100 years to perfect. The dealer I bought my PT from also had a used Colt Gold Cup for $1100, but said the PT had more features, was hand-fitted and tuned to match level tolerances with numbers matching frame, barrel and slide. The dealer said even though he was a "Sig guy" he owned a PT 1911 and had no mis-fire or jamming issues in over 1500 rounds. I don't know enough to be a gun snob yet, so I bought the PT new in stainless plus 100 rounds of ammo and a cleaning kit for just over $750 drive out. I only have 150 rounds through mine, wish I could do more "research" and report but ammo is so hard to find. No jams or mis-fire in those 150 tries, however. No parts breaking, falling off or poor machining that I can see. I'll be absolutely willing to report any of this kind of stuff to the forum if it is the case in the future.
As I mentioned earlier in this thread, I also own a S&W 686+ and I really, really like it. I think my dealer has also talked me into a Sig purchase in the very near future.
BTW, did you know that Taurus OEMs parts for many firearms manufacturers? It'd be ironic to be an avowed "Taurus-hater" but own other weapons you were perfectly happy with that had Taurus parts inside.
"I don't want to kill you and you don't want to be dead." Mal Johnson
I do know this is the case or MANY Taurus, and probably many PT1911's. But, mine and the few others I have handled were machined the same, if not better, than any Brazilian made Springfields I have had.
Sure they aren't as nice as a Colt, or a DW, and their price reflects that. Sure their price has gone up(whose hasn't). If you buy a PT-1911 Knowing all that has been mentioned, you will be fine. If you are buying it to be a shooter, you will be fine. If you are buying this to be a safe queen, collectible, heirloom, you will be sadly mistaken.
If I were in your shoes, I would make my first handgun purchase, a zinger, I'd get the S&W. But I'm not you, so good luck!
