First handgun and choice of caliber

The first handgun that I bought for myself was a .357 mag. I liked the way it felt and the way it looked. Now that I reload I really like the caliber because it is so easy to reload.

I purchased from a friend in another state my .40 VE. It's a good cheap gun. It's been very reliable and has become an extension of my right hand. I carry it often, and I enjoy it for its value.

It is nothing special. It needs a trigger job. It isn't super picky with ammo but has been only once in the 2000+ rounds I've ran through it. It was dirty cheap, and feels cheap compared to a more expensive firearm, but gets the job done. What I need for now.

I'm in the process of buying a springfield xd sc 9mm, just because its a little bit cheaper to shoot, is lighter and more concealable for my build.

My first handgun was for armed security guard work back in the mid 70s. I bought a NIB S&W Model 13, and the only thing I regret about it was selling it when I quit the guard service. It was 4", nickle plated with large checkered wood S&W combat grips, and had the wide trigger and hammer. It was sweet and I could shoot heavy Magnum loads all day. Every time I remember selling it, I kick myself. :(

For my first handgun I wanted something that was chambered in a serious self defense caliber but affordable enough to shoot regularly. I ended up deciding on 9mm since that was (and still is) the most affordable serious self defense caliber.

After I chose the caliber, I looked at over a dozen pistols. In the end I decided on a Walther P99.

So many fantastic replies. Thank you all! A lot of good advice; the most practical of which seems to be, buy a handgun you can get ammo for. 9mm seems to be the most prevalent here, and I was leaning in that direction anyway. Next Friday is the Crossroads Of the West gun show. I will be asking a lot of questions thanks to all of you.

On a side note, I have shot before and have been doing much research. This site is by far THE BEST I have come across. And the only reason I have not taken the plunge until now is that there was always something else I wanted to buy, like a new TV, BBQ, iPod, etc.

I hope every one of you had a happy Thanksgiving. I for one am extremely grateful for my second amendment rights!

Phil
