First handgun...$850max...H&K>?<SIG...

Proving my point on a $800+ gun why on earth should you have to pay an additional $25 become a home gunsmith. PS I don't buy new Sigs. The only one I have even considered in the last 5 years was a LNIB P227 SAS a gun was selling a the fun show for $650. I was a steal but I passed.

I find the trigger on most HKs to be horrible. I think the USP is a double whammy in that the grip is horrible as well. Just not a HK fan have owned USP 9/45 P30 and HK45 all bought and sold within 6 months of ownership. When I shot them compared to other guns I could not believe people pay $800+ for these things. I never paid near that always bought LNIB used and sold for what I had in them or more. YMMV

In the end to the OP whatever floats your boat. If you are happy then we are happy. In the end buy what you want with your money and be happy. If sometime down the road you change your mind sell the gun a move onto something else. Then Rise and repeat..... ;)
I don't cry about $25 when I just spent $800 (I find them used for $650 most times). I get your argument that you shouldn't have to, but it's like complaining about putting mud flaps on a brand new Audi. You just dropped $40000. A few hundred is going to break the bank? Really? Plenty of folks don't do the springs, it is just worth it to me. It is less than the cost of one mag and takes all of 30 seconds it is that easy (no gunsmith required). I do the same on CZs.

My comparison to new SIGs was because the op seemed to want to buy new and new vs. new I would go with HK personally. I buy used SIGs too, just put a 1990 P228 on layaway. But for me the HK is lighter and smaller for carry. If carry isn't a concern and we are talking a classic German P series the SIG is a better gun.

Sounds like a Glock guy!

+100 for the HK. It looks like you went with the USP45. Congrats.

I was going to suggest the P30, as it is my all time favorite handgun. I also have a VP9, and its a great gun as well, but the P30 is still the best.

Glad you found something that you liked.

Triggers, shriggers. The USP, P30, P229, FNX, CZ, etc. have fine triggers. Some are longer than others, some shorter, some crisp, some with a bit of squish. Find the one that you like, on the platform that you like, and then train with it until you are aces.

I just have to ask - what does this mean???

Like many, he smokes, but not in the house? And won't go outside unarmed is my guess.

OP, too bad you don't live closer. I have a like new HKUSPC I'd consider selling, that is if you could see your way clear to consider .45 ACP.

Edit: I see you're going .45 ACP as well.:D

What I would personally choose with an $850 dollar budget is an HK VP9 and I'd use the savings for a Garrett Industries IWB Silent Thunder Holster and a nice new Ares Gear Ranger Belt.

Which is also something I just did!

If I wanted something a bit more pricey, I'd look at the HK45, the SIG P226/P227 (pick your caliber), and the Sphinx SDP.

I can heartily recommend the SIG 229. If you get the .40 or .357SIG you can put the other barrel in it, or a 9mm barrel and spring and you have 2 or 3 guns in one. If you are looking for a .40 though, it's hard to beat the Walther PPQ. It's less money, but shoots great and is lighter for CCW use.
