First gun for 10yr old son

Another vote for the Marlin model 60. The basic blue/wood model is less than $170. Put a cheap scope on it and you can shoot bottlecaps at 50 yards all day long. I love my marlin 60! It's so accurate and easy to shoot that it gets almost boring sometimes!

Hickok45 has a nice video about the marlin 60

Before the Ruger American rimfire came out I would have voted for the CZ Scout, hands down. I believe the Scout comes with a single shot adaptor but it also accepts the 5 or 10 round magazines.

I've not fired a Ruger American but the ability to change the stock inserts to fit different shooters is a plus. Easier to find and probably less expensive than the Scout. Also it takes 10/22 magazines which are less expensive than the CZ mags.

For his first gun, get a nice wood stock one... I don't know why I say that, but I think that a nice wood stock would be nice to have especially for a "first".

For an inexpensive bolt action, I would look into...

a Marlin XT-22 (wood stock)

or a Savage Arms Mark II G

One other option, and one I would have loved to have, but not a bolt.. would be the Henry Golden Boy... what a nice "first" to have for a lifetime!

first time

Mine was a Marlin single shot bolt action that required cocking before siring.

Henry Lever Carbine Rifle
Model Number H001L
Barrel Length 16.125"
Weight 4.5 lbs.
M.S.R.P.* $355.00

Lastly, get your son HIS own rifle...just for him.

I understand what you are saying about getting him his own gun. I don't have a 22 myself so I was looking to get 2 for 1, if you will.

I have an 870 wingmaster, a Winchester 94 30-30, a glock 19 gen3 and the aforementioned CZ 75 P01.

But I hear ya.

I would say a cz 452 or another single shot for his first gun then let him work his way up to semi autos like the 10/22 that's how I started :)

Mike444 If it helps , a friend bought a Marlin XT .22, 2 weeks ago.
I reduced the trigger pressure to just-under 3 lbs & put a scope on for him.
Saturday , at the range, it performed just like every other Marlin rimfire I've ever used - rediculously accurate & mechanically reliable .
If you really want a semi/a then I would consider the Model 60 over the others.

If you want to go old school, there are still Remington 521-T rifles floating around out there.

My Father bought one new in the late 1940s or early 1950s. It is superbly accurate.

Helps a lot. Thank you. I like the idea of the bolt action as that's what I learned on.

My little Henry lever 22 is the same size as my bb/pellet gun. It would be a easy transition and he will not outgrow it. My favorite rifle.

I'm a fan of the remington 597. It costs a lot less than the 10/22, and 30 round magazines are available for them. It's my understanding that the 597 now comes with a bore sighted scope and is still under $200
