First CCW.

JMHO, but I see the 5.7 as a gimmick, and not a particularly attractive one at that.

If it were a viable SD cartridge, numerous LEAs would be using it. Can you name even one that does?

Nope...

Then there's the "el cheapo redneck version":

:)

Seriously though...I've studied the ballistics and effects of the 22Magnum, at least what I can read of it, and it's not worthless as a personal defense round. Not optimal, not hardly, but it has the .22LR beat cold. Esp. from a 4" barrel.

The FN FiveSeven looks to me like a modernized, more accurate and more reliable 22Magnum. And...that's not really a bad thing!

Fescobar: You are going to turn 21 and want something for conceal carry. You wanted a 5.7mm FN and now thinking of a .357 or a .32? Your almost at 2 opposite ends of the spectrum here and all over the map at the same time. The 5.7 is a good penetrator, thats about it. Its a poor choice for a carry pistol whatever you may have heard. For your first gun I would suggest a 9mm. This allows cheap fmj practice rounds and plenty of good hollow point choices for defense, just make sure you shoot enough defense ammo in your gun to know it functions.

I suggest going to a range and renting popular carry guns like the XD subcompact 9, Glock 26 or 19 and so forth and see what you like. You'll find out sooner than later its about what you like, not what everyone will suggest you should have, however there are some choices that are worse than others. Stick with a proven caliber like 9mm,40S&W, 45acp for semi-autos or a 357 magnum / .38spl for revolvers at least for your first gun.

5.7x28mm weapons are used in over 40 countries, and by hundreds of agencies in the United States alone. The Five-seveN pistol is used by numerous US law enforcement agencies. Passaic County, NJ Sheriff's Department (SWAT) and Duluth, GA police department are two examples.

I too toyed with the idea of the 5-7 for a ccw/hiking buddy. Ended up drifting away from the idea because of logistics (got a Gp100 3" with small grips, instead. A true beauty of a jack-of-all-trades). I have 5 calibers for handgun and I reload for 3 of them. Adding another caliber in the mix just didnt make sense, to me.

Rent a lot of guns, then make a carefully measured choice. For a 1st time CCW auto I'd suggest single stack, .380 or better, moderate in size and weight (so practice doesn't become loathed), good sights for use in low light.

For the revolver side, steel framed (so practice doesn't become loathed), .38special +P or better, the ability to put on a night sight up front.

Good Luck,
Lucky
