For a first rifle I would go with a CZ 452 or a Marlin or Henry lever.

I guess some missed it. He bought a 10/22!
I have owned a new model 10/22 and a new Marlin 60.
The 10/22 feels like a piece of junk beside the Marlin 60. The marlin 60 is also known for being more accurate. Both have about the same reliability. Sold the Ruger, still own the 60.
About the only thing the 10/22 wins on is aftermarket accessories.
The ruger has more votes simply because more people own Rugers then Marlins, and there is a thing called "brand loyalty"
..but if you'll notice, just about everybody that has owned both a marlin and a ruger will vote for the Marlin.

What, no Remington 597?!?
I have been lurking around this forum for a while, but this one got me to sign up. Yes, I know he already bought his rifle, and I personally think he made and excellent choice. I love both of my Ruger 10/22s. But I can't believe the Remington 597 wasn't one of his options. They are really excellent guns and great value. I would take it over a Marlin 795 every day and twice on Sunday, especially since they are about the same price. I have had bb guns that were better quality than that Marlin. They feel so cheap in you hands. The magizine is horrible and looks like an after thought. The sights are cheap junk. There is a big difference between inexpense and cheap. The Remington is a quality piece, while the Marlin is not.

Sure it feels cheap, but you start to forget about that when you realize that it cost less than many BB guns (with the current rebate it's $105 at Dick's) and that you can hit clothespins at 50yd with it with little difficulty, using the 400rd .22LR box as a front rest, with a bone-stock rifle.

Understand that I do respect the brand, and the 60 is a great gun, as are most of the other Marlins I've shot and handled. I was just astounded at how cheaply the 795 was put together. In fact the Marlin name and reputation is what had me looking at them in the first place. It's great that it's a shooter, I was just afraid it would fall apart after a little use. I guess if your looking for the cheapest rimfire around, that would be your choice, but I decided to spend a couple extra dollars and go with the Remington.

You should have looked for an old Winchester Mod. 75. They were used to train snipers in WW II. Mine easily shoots inside 1 MOA @ 100 yds.

OK, so he bought a 10/22 and I think that's a very good choice. Now he can enjoy the wide world of aftermarket parts and accessories that'll eventually let him have an accurate rifle...depending on budget. In my battery I have several .22LRs that have shot competitively against 10/22s in informal sessions at my normal range hangout. My most accurate is a Savage MkII Mako version with heavy barrel. My second most accurate is a Henry H000T (heavy barrel). I also have a 597, Evolution stock, heavy barrel, that has yet to lose to a 10/22 in our informal sessions. All of my rifles are out-of-the-box stock except for the scopes I must add to assist my 68-year-old eyes. I also have a basic 597, synthetic stock, sport barrel, but haven't found a 10/22 to match it against...yet.
