First 22 rifle, Bull barrel or sporter barrel?

Well, I've pretty much decided on a Ruger American thanks to this thread. I'm putting the pistol on hold indefinitely, as I'll be able to shoot much more with a 22 rifle given the ammo prices, even at gouged prices, and what fun is a gun if you can barely afford to shoot it. I figure between my machete and my shotgun I should be covered for home defense anyway, haha. Just need to get another $50 and I'll be able to get the Ruger.

Sorry if this has been asked but where can you get (if anywhere) a drop-in wood stock for the Ruger American Rimfire?

Another American question - would someone really choose the long barrel over the compact? Just for sight radius?

And how many mags come with the .22 mag & .17 HMR versions - just 1?

Thanks.

Boyds makes 2 but only for the .22lr model (for now)

Yes 1 mag comes with those models

I'm getting the long barrel for sight radius and because 18 inch rifles just feel too small for me. I am 6'5" though.

Well, for better or worse, ended up going a completely different direction. I ended up finding an SAR B6P handgun (the one I've been looking at) for $250 and it was too good to pass up. 22 rifle is still down the line, just have to save up and will probably end up going a bit cheaper and getting a semi.

Get a field gun with iron sights. It will be great for plinking and should you get the urge to go hunt small furry critters with it (and you likely will) it's much lighter to carry around all day.

I just bought a Savage MK II FV-SR for $260 cash at a gun show.

For the money, its about the best you can do. You get a threaded .22 bull barrel, free floated barrel, adjustable target trigger, and picatinny scope rail. Plus, its bolt action so you can shoot just about any .22 LR ammo without a problem.

I challenge anyone to find a new .22 rifle with those features for less! Also, I paid $260 at a gun show so I definitely overpaid, I know for a fact dealers can let them go for about $220 and make a profit.

Also, there are a ton of mark II variants so if you don't like the "tacticool" look of the fv-sr, you can get a more traditional model. They also make "target" model for about $200 more but all you really get in terms of performance is more velocity.

I was on the lookout for a Marlin XT22 in .22lr for some time and cannot seem to find one in my neck of the woods. I can find the Magnum variant. I just bought a new long barrel Ruger American for $269 locally. Comparing it with the competition, the Ruger is tops. It shoulders better than the Marlin (they had the magnum XT22 to compare) The fit and finish was as good as their full size large caliber rifles. The sights on the Ruger rimfires are the best in their price range easily. This thing seems to be built to the same standards are the larger caliber rifles in their line. It uses the 10/22 rotary magazine, which can be found everywhere. The stock IS free floated from the barrel. Wood stocks for the .22LR variant can be had from Boyds Stocks.

Both my .22's are older Marlin's: a 39A and a Mod 29N bolt action. That 29N is very accurate. Both seem to have fairly stout barrels. Put a Weaver K-4 on the 29N. Like shooting clay pigeons at 80-100 yards. Fun rifle.

Savage Mark II fv-sr

Get a Savage Mark II fv-sr.

It cost about $250 out the door.

It has a bull barrel which is free floated and threaded, an adjustable trigger, and a picatinney rail for optics. All these features make the rifle more accurate than most shooters ever will be.

Its bolt action so it will shoot just about anything you can fit in the chamber.

The only downside as a first rifle is that it doesn't have iron sights, so if you want to learn how to shoot with irons you will need a different rifle.
