Find the best price on a Savage 10FP

What Stock...?

I have a 111GL in '06. I like it. The cheap Birch stock is scratched to hell from a single hunting trip through the brush of Southern Arizona. So, I want another stock with a bit higher comb so I can get a better cheek weld. (remember this is a left-hand rifle...)

Any ideas without having to spend more on the stock than I did the rifle??

I just buy the Savage and shoot MOA out of the box. Then I replace the trigger or/and stock when I feel like it and shoot down near .5 MOA. Something both my rifles do on a regular basis.

The lowest price

Found an FFL who tells me that dealer cost on a 10FP is $333. He wants $25 on top of that (plus tax and shipping).

I talked to my brother last night. He does varmints with his Savages in .223 and 22-250, and coyotes with his sporter-weight .243. He also has a Rem700 BDL in .30-06 and a Yugo Mauser he built up in .25-06.

He tells me his .223 with 40-grain VMax does .25 inches at 100 yards. His .22-250 does .30 inches at 100 yards. His whippy barreled .243 does 5/8 inch at 100 yards.

He is the type that weighs each buwwit and case, does the necks and primer pockets. He breaks in (sorry, Gale McMillan)and fire-laps his stock barrels. He likes the stocks from SharpShooterSupply as well.

His only recommendation to me was to install a SharpShooter trigger (not a Timney or Canjar or Jewel) because even if the Savage trigger is able to be adjusted to my liking, it, like the Rem, is not consistant enough. The Savage will come out of adjustment after 500 rounds.

My brother has been in riflery for nearly forty years. That is a lot of experience for me to discount in the face of anonymous internet advice.

I put the Sharp Shooter Supply trigger in My 10FP and it really made a difference. Crisp and consistant with every pull. My next upgrade will be to the glass I've mounted on mine which right now is a cheap BSA scope. Still, the 10FP will do 1/3" groups at 100 yards off a Harris bipod. Ordered the SSS trigger through Brownells.

I don't know about the earlier SStriggers but sometimes the old ones required a little bit of filing to be done on the stock, depending on what stock you have.

Now that Savage is using SStriggers as standard equipment on some models, one would hope for a better fit on their stuff.

YMMV.

Prof,

Mine's been in over a year now, so this is from memory. There was a tab on the SSS trigger that I had to file for it to fit properly, but I didn't have to do any stock work at all. Installation instructions are well written and easy to follow. As with anything, read them the entire way through and then start. The results are well worth the (minimal) effort.

I bought my 10FP for $375 from my local dealer. I bought the SharpShooter trigger from Brownell's and had a professional install it for $70.
