Finally, my first HK

I acquired my first HK yesterday, a USP compact 40. Today I took it to the range to sort out the new pistol and adjusting to it for everyday carry and use. The compact 40 is a sweet gun to shoot, handle, and hit where you look. I shot it from up close and personal to 100 yards. It is nice to have a DA/SA action again … I enjoyed it very much today.

Does anyone who also owns a compact HK USP have any problems with any ammo choices? I shot the new Federal HST loads, and will carry that load, as the reputation for exceeding the FBI standards is great for this bullet and load. I also shot Fiochchi standard hardballs for most of the shooting session.

Most HK's will run anything you feed them.
I always liked them but they don't fit my hands as well as a Glock

Excellent choice. Congratulations. The only ammo issues I know of is a lot of the 45's don't like Hornady ammo. I haven't had any problems in the 9mm though. One of my primary defensive rounds is 135gr Critical Duty +P and it has been flawless. HST is my overall favorite and haven't had any issues with it either.

You should be just fine.

My first HK was a USP compact as well, but that was a long time ago. A world class pistol if one exists. I've yet to shoot any ammo that didn't functionin it. My current prefered ammo is Win. PDX because I shoot it well, but most any quality ammo fills the bill.

Enjoy your new HK.

That is what I am going to carry at the moment. I still shoot other guns, but this one may share carry duty with my 30S...

I have a P2000, very close to the USP-C. It is a 9mm, but I have had 0 ammo issues at all. It eats everything I feed it. I wont run any steel cased ammo in any of my guns, but have ran plenty of remanufactured through it.

I use Black Hills JHP's in it.

It is my favorite handgun and my EDC. You did good.

Thanks for the kind words. I feel good about it, so it must be right. Guns are very personal, and feel plays a part as well as performance. Confidence comes from many factors, and if you are confident you won't be prone to making shots you should not have due to fear or lack of confidence.

I own several HK USP Compacts over the last 20 years. My USPc 40 is my main EDC. All my USP C in 9,40,45acp feed everything including garbage steel ammo and various reloads. I am not sure if any of them ever had a malfunction of any kind. In my experience the USPc is THE best DA/SA EDC gun made. Built in a time when the guns performance and quality was THE most important priority.
As much as I love all my Sigs, the HK is significantly lighter to carry and points and shoots the same as a P229. FYI. The USP was built from the ground up for the 40S&W, so the 9mm and 45acp is nothing for the USP.

$200 rebate puts the HK in the same price point as... well... just about everyone else!

Well, I guess I know what I am doing with my next paycheck.

The only question boils down to HK45 or USPc or P30.

The grip.

I have the P30 V1 (light LEM) and it's pretty amazing. The LEM trigger takes a little bit of time to get used to... many people - myself included don't shoot the LEM well right off the bat. Initially, I was a bit turned off by it... but after some practice and getting comfortable, it's very fast and accurate for me. You get the benefit of the same trigger every time kind of like a striker fired gun. No decocker or safety to mess with.

My gripe with LEM is you still have the long takeup. Yes subsequent shots go from the reset, but if I'm going with a consistent trigger pull every time I'd rather just get a striker where the length of pull is much shorter. YMMV.

I often see police trade-in .40 USPs for sale at a LGS for good prices. I keep waiting for 9mm to show up. Maybe I'll just have to cave one day and grab one. :)

By the way Wildbill, I thought you couldn't learn the paddle mag release? ;)

Just messin' with you. :)

Being new in the HK line, what is it about the P30 you like over the others?

Ergonomics. Most ergonomic pistol made in my opinion. I already have the standard P30 V3, (DA/SA with decocker) I would really like the long slide model as well.

Also, I am a big fan of the 9mm. Plenty for self defense (YMMV), and relatively low cost to practice with.

Plus frankly, the handgun is sexy.
