Just got the census today. 38 pages, BUT it's duplicated for the first SIX people in the house. Now, is that the LONG one or the SHORT one?

dennis that is the long form. Mine was 3 pages. By the way I filled mine out over the web by going to www.census.gov. I answered only the first question which was 2. I left the others blank. Even though I only filled out the one question it went through. As one perosn said they will send in the $100 fine, because his privacy is worth a lot more.

$100 for not answering the questions, eh?
My privacy is worth that, so bill me.

I posted the satute because that is the law. Now, as a group we got lawyers, and money, and guns. Forget the guns for now. Lets' deal with the money. Anybody on this forum who gets prosecuted, evened threatened, by doing what they think is right on this deal has backup. We both may deny the info, but only one gets nailed. Hey, I'll pay my support to anyone here who is "abused". Please think of me too :).

I would rather pay your fine than give up mine.

Long forms first. They will get audited first. I got one. I will not comply. Here we go....

Unfortunately for those of us concerned about our privacy, the text of Article I, Section 2, paragraph 2 includes:

"...The actual enumeration shall be made within three years after the first meeting of the Congress of the United States, and within every subsequent term of ten years, IN SUCH MANNER AS THEY SHALL BY LAW DIRECT." (emphasis added)

Seems like the Congress has the Constitutional authority to ask whatever they shall damn well please.

I wonder if I'll be fined for answering "American" to all the race related questions.

Checked the mail today, Lo and behold-
short form in my box, long form in the
brother-in-law's box. :D Them's the breaks.
Contempt and fines aside, we're big on
NASCAR here in the South, and I'm wondering
if they'll take Winston Cup in the Race box...

The first census was taken in 1790 and Congress decreed that a census be taken every 10 years. Today its primary purpose is to chart population growth in each part of the country to see where federal tax dollars will be spent, and to determine the number of representatives each state will have in the U.S. House of Representatives. [/quote]

This is the reason to fill out the numbers of people who live in the household. Your area will get the federal money to build roads, etc., based on the number of people who live in the area as reflected in the census results. As for the rest, maybe we should tell them we're all Eskimos or Latvians.

(No offense is intended to any Eskimos or Latvians ;).)

MEF, reread. Congress can "enumerate" in such a manner as they see fit. Enumerating (counting) doesn't require they ask what my utility bills are per year. Despite the reading of Title 13 that I get (any questions that are added to the enumeration one I must answer too), I don't plan to answer any other than how many we are and our names. I do plan to include a letter stating why.

dwlsharpe:

While I would agree with your reading of the Constitution (enumeration=counting), Congress has apparently decided that enumeration=description & identification, as well.

The reason information about one's age and race (as well as height, weight, hair and eye color, etc.) is required on, for example, a state driver's license, is for identification of the licensee.

The extraneous questions on the census form should be viewed as an attempt to IDENTIFY as well as count the residents; to what end I don't know, but let the conspiracy theories fly!

At least they didn't demand everyone's SSN, as they do on the income tax forms.

I did - took less than 5 minutes... You guys didnt know I was Samoan? Yeah - thats why that Tongan jumped me a few months back...
