"Fill it up, sir?"

Just wondering if gas prices are skyrocketing elsewhere in the US?
Here in MN, up until a month ago it was pretty steady, between $1.199-$1.269.
Now, we're up to $1.459-$1.499!
Why is it going up so much?

It's costing me three more bucks every time to fill up, and I have to do this 2-3x/week.
This stinks, -Kframe :(

We are in the same ranges here in Northern KY. Don't feel too bad, I have to go fill up my Suburban today. I think that it will probably suck $60 or so out of my wallet.

The OPEC cartel is dropping production quotas for the member nations. This reduces the supply of petroleum on the world market and drives prices up, which is the goal of the cartel. They are betting that less oil at higher prices makes them more money than more oil at lower prices.

I saw premium gas up here in Cook County, IL going for $1.82!.

Greg,
I feel for you! I used to drive a Suburban too. The lady always gave me a big Thank You! after I paid for my fill up.

It's around $1.35 to $1.45 here in NC too. A few months ago it was less than $1.15.
I'm sure glad I work at home, my car's got 452 ci, three holleys totaling 1300 cfm, and runs on 1/2 mix of $3.25 a gallon racing fuel!

Now you know why brits drive those golf cart things . . .
It's only about $1.38 for the cheap stuff I buy here in Western, rural Illinois. Still a hit but nothing like Springfield or Chicago. Friends don't let friends live in Cook County. JCOYoung, Miss Demeanors, this is an intervention! :)

The good thing is it's making me get my old mule of a Caddy checked out--can't afford to buy gas for it when the mileage is so bad. I think it's going to be expensive to get it running right but probably less than the gas would be--it'll be forever before prices drop if they ever do.

Actually you can thank the American oil companies . I saw an interview with a V.P. from Exxon one day where he explained how the price goes up . Let's assume that OPEC normally exports 1 million barrels a day at $25 a barrel . Now they cut down to 900,000 barrels a day . John Doe of Exxon calls up and orders 300,000 barrels for delivery tomorrow . ( This is of course simplified ) . OPEC tells him that they only have 250,000 barrels left for delivery tomorrow because Shell just bought 400,000 barrels and paid $25.25 a barrel for it . John Doe of Exxon now offers $25.75 to guarantee that he gets 350,000 barrels the next day . So now when Shell calls they get the sad story and must offer $26 a barrel for a guaranteed amount the next day . Of course there are more than 2 companies vying for all this oil but the point is that rather than risk losing market share the companies will allow the price to rise . After all you WILL pay it !!! It's not OPEC , it's market economics and our willingness to pay for what we want . We all need to cut back on our driving a bit and watch the market stabilize .

Actually I live in Will County, but I work in Crook County. Gas is still pretty 'spensive in Will though... When I moved down here from Lake County, I absolutly refused to live in Crook County.

Gwinny, I always thought it'd be cool to have a Mini Cooper "golf cart". Too bad they don't import them here anymore (safety regs). The "new" Mini will be imported here but those things are ugleee.

We're going through the same problem here at present -- and distances we travel are more in line with those in the USA than the UK.

I just dragged the calculator out and did the conversion: we're currently paying approx. $2.65US a gallon. My Isuzu Trooper (3.2 V6 auto) is now costing me around $40 a week in unleaded.

OPEC apparently has a stranglehold on the oil supply as indicated in an earlier post. They meet next month and if they decide to NOT significantly increase production/sales, we in Australia have been warned to look forward to paying $3.75US a gallon by the end of the year.

But of course, it doesn't end there -- the cost of transport rises as well -- which means an increase in shelf prices of goods.

Couple this with interest rate rises, plus -- here in Oz -- the introduction of a GST at 10% and I'd say we're in for some mighty hard times over the next couple of years.

Time to stock up on ammo and reloading supplies while I still have some cash.

Remember the gas 'crisis' in 1973?
My older brother was a Phillips 66 asst manager of a station, and had to goto a meeting in KC right after that all began.
A regional rep told them all that there in fact, was no oil shortage. But rather that all the tankers were standing off-shore waiting for the price to settle where they wanted it. IOW, it WAS the Oil Co's. that set this all up, and blaming others.

I don't suppose certain person's in WDC would have anything to do with this. Just the thing to rattle the sheeples just before elections, huh? Then introduce some miraculous Executive Orders to save the day, and secure the office for more destructions...

Please remember the Nixon saying,
You can fuel some of the people all of the time,
You can fuel all of the people some of the time,
But you can't fuel all of the people all of the time.

Just my $1.49 a gallon worth here.

Best Regards,
Don

TOMBERGSTR,

I gave the thumbnail answer without getting into the whole futures market and balance of payments. America exports billions in petroleum every year. The companies get a better deal overseas than they would if they sold it here in the states. Most American oil is purchased from Venezuela, a member of OPEC but not exactly Middle Eastern.

This Administration has also seen fit to curtail further oil exploration here in America due to pressure from the enviromental lobby. Apparently, Mr. Clinton would rather put independent truckers out of business and drive up inflation than do what is in the best interest of the nation. Go ahead Bill. Nothing like paying $2 a gallon to make people eager to vote...

Just last summer gas was at less than .70/gal! Now its gone up over 100% in 6 months. This is a record increase. The station manager today told me that he has the inside scoop that it will be over $2.00/gal by summer!!!

Don, LOL!!! :D

I better pump up the tires, oil the chain and start peddling.

If the powers that be would quit taxing us to death, start pumping Alaskan oil and quit depending on 'ol Ahab the Arab, the Shiek of the Burnin' Sand, we might just keep prices down. We might all end up driving cammels. (There's nobody that could keep up w/ol Clyde once he'd got goin.) Or worse yet, YUGOs!!!!

Oh stop it. There is no inflation. Alan Greenspan has stopped it.

Gasoline is simply an "aberration" caused by a higher price. Like cars, houses, food, etc.

Don't worry about it. Buy a bigger 4WD. Shaleem weel thank you.

Ok an update. It took $55 to fill the Suburban today. I also would rather wrap my family in many tons of steel than a fiberglass vehicle. An extra $5/week is minor to thumb my nose at the Green Weenies. That said it also took close to $9 to buy three gallons of milk that the three kids go through in about 2 days. It's been hovering around $2.89/gal for at least 6 months here.

Its 1.46 here in northern indiana for the cheapstuff. My trucker friends one of them went to dc today said that some of them will stop shipping and we will have shortages on thinks like milk and eggs and the grocery store. What people dont understand is that everythings price is determined by the price of oil. Truckers are going to raise their rates to pay for their fuel and will in turn raise prices everywhere else. Its amazing how the president can cause the market to run higher and higher but can't make the price of oil go lower and lower. Inflation here we come!

Greetings From The Deep South; Here in "The
Heart OF Old Dixie", it's between 1.459 and
1.499 as well. For those of you who don't
know, "The Heart OF Old Dixie" is Alabama!!!

Prices are about the same here in PA. And I drive a Suburban also. My weekly bill has gone up by about $5.
I thought that at the begining of this I saw a news report that was saying that the tankers were lining up again waiting for the prices to rise. Yeah we should pump more of our oil out to our overseas friends, And close down a few more oil wells around this country.
After what we did for those oil folks in that sand country they sure can shove it to us now. Lets think about this next time Saddam wants to throw another little party for them .
As it was said by ESSO "Happy Motoring" :)

Gas prices here in Austria are about $0.93 PER LITRE. Now if I could just find the proper conversion factor for gallons to litres...

Howdy from Texas! Across the street, it's staying around 1.35 a gallon. Cool huh? Here's some more variables:
Remember about a year ago when it was .77 a gallon? well- it wasn't due to the Arabs, it was because of our former communist friends. They flooded the market to get hard currency. They also drove the prices down too! Now we have our little "problem" in Chechnya. This war will become expensive if it keeps up like it has. This will cause the Russians to open the flood gates and let the oil flow to finance the war. Good for us, bad for Arabs and Chechen Rebels. You may also see some sanctions lifted on Iraq so that they can sell oil again, and this time Iraq will play hard-ball. They'll be happy with the sanctions unless They're all lifted at once. Then Der Schleekmiester will sacrifice all principle to insure a good economy for the incomming Gore administration. Iraq will again be a thorn in our @ss, Russia will be raging in war with their Chechen problem, The Arabs will have destroyed "the longest running peacetime expansion in the history of America", and we'll all be looking at 4 years of Algore/Gray Davis administration. Sound pretty bleak? Americans deserve this. I'll take pleasure in my pain knowing that all those Clinton/Gore folks will be suffering too! When Gas hits 2 bucks a gallon, I'll quit driving, and spend my money instead on cheap wine so I can spend the next 4 years in drunken bliss, so as to not notice the fact that the democrats have taken the last threads of the bill of rights and used them to stitch our new social program titled: The new Final Solution!
In Short: Get off your--- and vote your conscience, and you'll only spend a few years in purgatory instead of the rest of your life.
