Fiber Optic Front Sight

You can buy the Fiber Optic sights from Brownells. If my memory serves me correctly, you buy the FO post and have a smith drill your exisitng sight. Then install the FO post.

I have a Hi Viz on my Glock 35. I use it for IPSC and I think it rocks. It's way better than white dot or plain steel front sights. It has held up to 1,000 or so rounds, however I did get brake cleaner on it once and the light pipe seemed to start dissolving, so I take the pipe out when I do a serious cleaning. Hi Viz gives you green and red pipes of three diameters each color. I like the green pipe best, but blue sounds like it would be pretty cool too. I have a model 22 as a house gun and it wears Trijicons, just in case I have a "situation" in very low light.

I agree with you %100 George.

I have the Hi-Viz on my carry gun right now and I hate it. I am waiting for some Mepros.

The only time I see the Hi-Viz better is when it is bright out, and at that point, I don't need anything but iron.

If I were building a competition gun, I might consider it, but the only gun I use for competition is my carry gun.
The "fiber optic" sights are completely unacceptable for carry. The lower your sight radius because they are so long, they tend to snag on clothing, and in low light they just plain suck.
I decided to stick with Mepros. Even in low light, they glow bright enough that I can see them clearly, and in the day they are extremely visible with their white dots, and lastly they are low profile and "snag proof".
My next favorite, on my hunting-type handguns, are Heinie Straight 8 slant pros. Both types of tritium sites are bright enough when new to glow very brightly, even in dim light. And, both are not that expensive, for tritium sights.

I don't quite understand what you mean by FO sights "lowering your sight radius"...what does that mean? I have an FO sight on my Norinco 1911, and I don't really see any difference in physical dimensions between it and the Bomar iron front sight that it replaced.
To me, the FO front sight is superior to a plain iron sight. Period. If the FO sight doesn't 'work' in low light, neither does a plain iron sight. Of course there are 'better' more expensive sights, but I'd rather have a FO sight than a plain iron sight.
Just my .02c worth. :)

Hello,

I didn't mean to "diss" on your preferred sight too much, but it is just not for me, and I do not understand the use for them except possibly in some competitions.

My Hi-Viz sight is very long and therefore decreases the sight radius. That means that it decreases the distance between the front and rear sight. One of the key advantages of carrying a longer handgun is for the longer sight radius, to give you more accuracy. The Hi-Viz destroys that. My Glock 22 is left with the sight radius length of a compact Glock 23, so by using the Hi-Viz sight I have eliminated one of the advantages of using a full sized handgun.

I would likely prefer a Hi-Viz over iron sights, but I would prefer a regular white dot over that, and a tritium setup over all. JMHO. The Hi-Viz tends to snag (and can break), and actually in low light, I can see a white dot better, and a tritium dot best. To each his own, I am just throwing in my two cents. :)
