Feral hogs in Florida hunt this Easter.. sidearm

What's the muzzle velocity of the .357? If it's above that of the .45 when using heavy bullets, it would be my choice.

I say this mostly because a buddy of mine has a mounted trophy of a 250-pound hog he killed with a .357 revolver. He thought it was not a difficult kill.
 
Whichever gun you are more accurate with. You can use a S&W 500 if you want, but it's worthless if you can't hit anything with it. As long as you use a heavy bullet(or at least not a HP), both should be fine. My personal preference? I'd take the P220.
 
We're going to be really close. 25 yards max at this place apparently. That's if we don't get anything from the tree stands in a while. Then they have dogs sniff them out, but they don't catch and hold them. They'll break off.

I don't know Art, maybe it'll be my choice too. I know for sure that .357SIG is a nasty round just don't know if it'll bring what I want it to bring to the table.

P220 huh badger...The guys at work are saying the same thing.
 
The .357 Sig has quite a bit more energy. The .45 ACP has been around a long time and could easily handle a lot more power in modern firearms. The problem is there is a massive liability if a hot loaded round blew up in an older gun. The .45 GAP is proof that the .45 ACP case is longer than it needs to be since the ballistics from the .45 GAP are almost identical. The case of the .45 GAP is actually slightly shorter than a 9mm. .357 Sig should be able to take Florida sized hog fairly easily.
 
In that case, either would be acceptable. Consider I used to dispatch trapped hogs in the pen with a .22LR. 1 shot behind the ear... Worked every time.
 
It's not the caliber, it's the bullets. ACP and Sig bullets are designed for people. If I were using my ACP, I'd load 200 Hard Lead SWC to 1000fps if the piggys were no larger than 100#. Anything larger, my Ruger 44 Special or 45 Colt loaded with 240-275 SWC at 1100fps.
 
Well... I've had mixed results with handguns and pigs....

45 caliber tends to have inconsistent results on them.
I fired a shot down the top of the head wit a 45 and it made an exit out of its chest, he locked up and fell over.. I went to get a rope from the truck and when I turned back around he was back up and walking


Killed a few with 9mm, it's no rifle cartridge is all I can say but will work...

In my experience with pigs, velocity rules the day at close ranges.
 
That's why I want to take my .357SIG and stagger JHP and FMJ'S. But I'm getting grief for that... everyone's bringing .45ACP or .44MAG.

I think .357SIG will dispatch them just fine. Can't we agree? :)
 
Wait... You're bringing the AR for longer shots, and only intend the pistol for very close, pants messing moments or coup de gras shots, right? Were talking your pistol being used on about 20' to point blank, right? Anything you've mentioned with work just fine!

I wasn't recommending you buy a .22LR for this trip. :eek: I was merely pointing out that hogs are not impossible to kill and all of your selections are much more powerful than my lowly .22LR. Quit worrying, pick the one you shoot best, get some good ammo, and go have some fun finding some piney woods rooters!;)
 
Lol. Thanks man. Like an asshat tonight at work I shot my 127gr Ranger T +p+'s. (9mm) which is my go to for 2 legged critters. So I guess I'll just see when the day comes..I think .357SIG is on my mind a little more for some reason.

Taurus PT1911. Black. No rail. $525.

I'm a HUGE gun brat, so this is going to be fun for me. All I may do is change the hammer myself.


.45ACP it is. Staggered ball ammo and JHP's right? Or ball ammo?
 
Will the JHP actually open and expand? Just off the cuff, I'd figure that the Ball would be more reliable for penetration.
