I am looking for both department issue weapons and personally owned handguns, that ride with you all day in the duty rig. I am also curious of you like or don't like your duty weapon, and what you would choose if you were in charge of firearms & purchasing.

I am actually going to make a switch from the Glock 17 (a great firearm that I just cannot shoot well) to a Sig P226, Beretta 92 series, Walther P99 or CZ-75BD Police. Looking for feedback.

As a former LEO,

I relied on a Sig-Sauer P220A in .45 ACP, since 1988.
You know what? I still rely on the same weapon, even
as I type this. Absolutely, 0 malfunction's, of any kind.
Of course. it get's a lot of TLC. :D :)

Best Wishes,

my department issues the sig 225/226 in 9mm and the 229 in.40

i vascilate between my beretta 96 (.40) and sig 220 (.45) depending on how many rounds i feel like carrying.

i like the .40 but the 229 just wouldn't shoot for me, maybe if they'd issue me a 226 in .40

BTW

My department issues the Glock 17, but we have the option of carrying a personally owned handgun with written permission and qualification. From that group we have one guy carrying a Sig P225, one w/ a Beretta 92FS and one who carries a Glock 19. I like the G17, just cannot shoot it as well as I can the Sig or Beretta. I threw my vote on for Glock since that's what I currently carry.

In uniform I have to carry the dept. issued Beretta 96-G with 180 gr. speer gold-dots. I am a detective so I carry my Glock 19 with 124 gr. +p Remington Golden Sabres.

I too currently carry a Glock 17, but after this week-end, it will be replaced by a Sig 226 9mm. I find the Sig's grip fits my hand better, resulting in better shot placement.

Glock 23 for patrol 165 grain federal hydrashok. Glock 27 for Detectives. One female officer has been issued a Glock 19 in 9mm. I love my duty Glock 23 but, I carry a EG Makarov off duty.

Duty issue is the SIG-229 in 40 cal 165 grain JHP Gold dots
off duty is a pristine SIG-220 in 38 super 125 grain JHP Winchester Silver tips

Surely there is more than 19 current or former LEO's on TFL.

And yes, I guess I did miss H&K on the list. My bad.

My department has a fairly broad list of approved manufacturers. I started out carrying a Colt Gold Cup and then switched to a Glock 23 for a few years. The last year or two, I've carried an Hk P7M13, but I still carry a 1911 during some training. In my eyes, the P7's exceptional practical accuracy makes up for the slightly weaker bullet performance, and I carry primarily in regular clothes.

So .......... I guess my P7 puts me in the "Rugers and others" category. :D :P

I can see I am not going to live down the H&K thing. Probably didn't come to mind because I have never seen a LEO with an H&K. Glock and Beretta rule around here. Who carries the CZ on duty?

18 years as a patrol officer. S&W 5906 on duty with 9mm Gold Dot 115 gr. Off duty, S&W 3913 or 669 with the same ammo.

Given a choice of the selections in your first post, I'd probably opt for a completely stainless P226, a Beretta Elite 1A, or a Beretta Vertec (which I've handled but haven't shot.) I've never really liked the balance of the alloy framed Sigs, but the new steel frame P226 should be fairly nice -- heavy, but very nice. Beretta's are generally great weapons, and pre-ban high cap magazines are easy to find. That way you don't have to bother with letterhead. The 92's grips are a bit large for my hands, so I had a gunsmith manually reduce the grips by half.

I don't know of very many who carry an Hk either -- I only know of a couple with my Dept (of > 3,500) who carry P7s. I believe that this may be the last year of production for the Hk P7M13, otherwise, I'd personally stick with the P7. My CZ 85s are a couple of my favorites -- great ergonomics and nice trigger with inexpensive high cap magazines. No experience with the Walther.

My department currently issues the Glock 17, 19, and 26 for plain clothes assignments. They allow any officer to carry any of the following weapons in 9mm,.40 S&W, .45ACP;

1. Beretta
2. Smith & Wesson
3. Sig Sauer
4. Glock
5. 1911 Government, Commander, Ofc. Model. Various manufacturers.
6. Browning Hi-Power.

Must qualify with it and have it inspected by our armorer. Majority stick with the Glock but quite a few Hi-Powers and 1911's.

I carry either a lightly tuned Para-Ordnance P14 Signature model, or Glock 30 depending on my clothing (currently in an undercover assignment). Waiting for my Ed Brown Kobra though to arrive any day now.

I am 5'10" 180 and yes it is possible to carry a P14 concealed.

Thanks to all who have responded to the poll. I may just try and make up a chart some day of all the LEO's on TFL and what they carry. Could be interesting. Now if we only had a "cop talk" forum on here like they do at GT............

Glock 23C

We have the choice of an issue 23C or a 22C or we can carry a personal weapon. If I could choose I would opt for an issue 23 and not a 23C.

Glock's are not really good looking, not overly expensive (some judge quality by this measure), but they are just so darned reliable. I'm issued and am most happy with a Glock!

Issued G22. Currently qualed on Sig P-226 (40 and 357), P226 (9mm), Glocks 17, 21, 22, 23. I'll see about getting qualed on G20. Carry P-229 in 40. -Coug
