Although the M48 stands for 1948 model, these rifles were made in the early to mid 1950's. I have one and it is one of my favorite Mausers. Shoot one and safe queen the other
Then my gun that the serial number starts with a V COULD have been manufactured in 1957 (not that it matters much to me). And the one with the A is likely to be much earlier such as late 30's or early 40's right? I'm learning as I go. Can you recommend any book(s) that would be pertinent on the "Mauser Family"?
I got the book by Ball a couple of months ago. Interesting reading, great help in identification.
Doesn't go into valuations at all, and often only passing references to relative rarity- so it's of limited value if you're wondering "what it's worth".
It's official. I've been bitten by the Mauser Bug. I have the two M48's pictured earlier and now I have two German K98's on the way. I'll post some photos after I receive them. Stocking up on 8mm ammo for them and my M53/MG42. Looks like SGAmmo has some good ammo and prices.
I received the one by Bogdanovic yesterday. It has a LOT of interesting info on the Serbian and Yugoslav Mausers which will be helpful. Haven't received the book by Ball yet. The "what is it worth" thing is interesting but I don't worry too much about that. What it's worth TO ME is what's important.
By the way, I was looking through my Netflix menus this evening trying to find something interesting to watch. I decided on a show I'd never heard of before but looked like it might be interesting. The name is "Lillyhammer" and stars Steven VanZandt who was in The Supranos. Long story short he re-locates to Norway after testifying about mobsters in NY. There are several scenes there with some guys with a nice looking Mauser. Looked like a K98 but couldn't tell for sure. Pretty interesting!
