Favorite Range Chambering

Hey TFL, I just wanted to start a little discussion on here about everybody's favorite round that they enjoy most at the range. Whether it be for just kicks and giggles or actual competition, my experience is everybody usually has a particular cartridge that is dear to their heart for various reasons. I just wanted to hear what different people want to say. Which cartridge, out of what rifle, etc, etc. I'd have to say from the limited experiences I've had in terms of variety, my favorite so far would have to be .243. I shot it out of a buddy's Savage 10. Sweet little shooter that one is.

.223 Rem.

I have a couple of presicion bolt guns in the caliber so that I can enjoy shooting really small groups without killing the bank account.

This one is the one that gets the most use.

Without a doubt the 6.5x55 it has 243 level recoil, 6mm PPC accuracy and 300 Win Mag trajectory/drift at long range. Makes for a darn good hunting rifle too.

Another 6.5x55 vote.
Shame that round never really caught on here.
Very low recoil, effective for any form of hunting I'd ever be doing, and accuracy from a 120+ year old round that can compete with darn near any rifle round no matter how new.

I really enjoy shooting cast bullets out of my 7.62x39 carbine. Recoil is minimal and pinging steel at 100 yards with iron sights is very satisfying.

I like it so much I'm considering the same thing in 5.56, although I'd have to buy bullets for it.:p

On a side note I really think a favorite caliber has much to do with what platform it's being fired through. I wouldn't enjoy a 30-06 in a bolt gun, but it's amazing in my Garand. Likewise my AR does nothing for me but 5.56 in a handy CZ carbine would be a hoot.

well... these rifles are for just what you are talking about... I have my own 300 yard range, & love to take any one of these short actions out for a casual paper punching afternoon...

6BR for me...ultra efficient, superb brass life, boringly accurate routinely shoots in the 2's& 3's at 100 yds, easy to load/tune...cheap to reload and great on barrel life...Ive let people shoot it and converted them right on the spot.

Currently its the 30-06. Just bench shooting out of Mil Surplus though I hope to get a heavy barrel one of these days (CZ is talking about that option and I like CZ)

Possibly move to 308 where you can get heavy barrel from pretty much all of them but my heart is in 30-06.

.22mag and .223. If i have a need for more boom ill grab my 7mm08 because of its great ballistics and low recoil in a nice light and handy package

204 ruger, a joy to shoot I have a few bolt guns chambered in it, my favorite is my cooper m51 western classic, but I have a sako 85 that shoots 204 and shoots awesome also, actually anything I ever put that round on shoots great...

I'd say my favorite would be the 5.56. I don't actually own any .223/5.56 guns, but I get plenty of range time with the M4 carbine during my National Guard drills. I enjoy it because it's just such a soft recoiling round, and I find the M4 to be a very easy rifle to shoot well. The AR15 type rifles are just so easy to get comfortable with IMO.

Without a doubt, no worry of contradiction, it is the 22 Long Rifle. I own several high-quality rifles in this chambering, and enjoy my time whenever I can make a day of it just shooting away.

I really enjoy the accuracy and zero recoil of the 17HMR but it sucks in the wind. The .223 is an easy to shoot step up as long as the wind is not gusty. The .308 heavy barrel isn't too bad recoil wise and is a great wind bucker.
It's not a "one size fits all" answer.

For rifle, 223. Handgun, 45acp. I reload both so shooting is fairly inexpensive, not to mention just plain fun and enjoyable.

it depends on the range. usually when I'm at family get togethers at maw maws house, all the menfolk take the guns out back while the women complain about the menfolk. the range there is about 80 yards so mostly we just do handguns and 22s, I find myself shooting 9mms and 45ACPs the most there in both rifles and handguns.

when I'm at my public range I almost exclusively shoot rifles and my favorite feeling in the world is shooting the 400 yard gong with my arisaka type 44. of all my old warhorses, it's the only one that will do it reliably and man it puts a smile on my face every time I do it.

the t44 is the one in the back here
