A Swiss army knife and a Surefire go with me all the time. I may change the carry weapon to the choice of the day, but that knife and lite are an always companion.

I grew up in the '50s with a massive amount of "war stories" of WWII available. The entrenching tool, folding shovel, was often the CQB weapon of final recourse. It was shorter than a bayonet mounted rifle and some units sharpened theirs with a file. Use like a short pike or battle axe, swing like a baseball bat.

Who notes the modern triple fold plastic version would be problimatical in a fight.

Entrenching Tool

I guess I have a hard time seeing how it could be viewed as a "favorite" weapon, or 1st choice weapon (besides a gun). Sure it can be used as a weapon in a pinch, if it's all you have. It can club, and it can cut some too. But it seems that it's far far inferior to some other weapon choice, if you HAVE a choice, be it sword, hatchet or whatever, so I'm just not understanding the "love" it's getting from so many people. I'd take on an e-tool bearer with my chisa katana any day of the week, and twice on sundays.

Don't get me wrong - it sounds like a great weapon of last choice, as you say, for the soldier who doesn't have room to carry a lot of stuff, and doesn't have any other weapon once he's out of ammo. But I can't see why anyone would vote for it in the poll as their favorite weapon. Any, to each his own.... :)

The E-tool

Well if it were me I would love to have an E-tool by my side anytime of the day. I had a lot of encounters with huge tree stumps and lots of sand when we were told to "dig in". The only reason why I favor the E-tool it's because I know how to use it, I am comfortable using it, especially in close combat, then again if it the enemy ever got that close to me, I should give up on owning rifles/pistols. Of course if someone with a katana, machete or any other long knife comes at me I would want to have my Beretta PX4 Storm .40 with 14 +1 rounds. If you've never seen an E-tool click below

You can also use the open end of a canteen cup, just grab it from the bottom and bash his/her face in.

"Tools of the Trade"

The best weapons I have ever carried have been tools of the trade. I have worked as a mechanic, plumber, A/C tech, carpenter, dock worker, roustabout, etc. All those nifty tools become weapons of opportunity down here. I can use one and nobody really thinks twice because they are/were for work.

I use my Swiss Army knife and my Lock Blade knife quite a bit, they both come in real handy for little chores that come up on a daily basis. I'm really not looking forward to flying to Phoenix in Dec. without having them on my person. It's really going to suck and I'll be counting the miniutes until I"m back on the ground and can get into my bag and get my knives back in my pocket where they belong. :(
