Favorite military handgun opinion please

COLT 1911A1- Time tested design and caliber. The pistol was way ahead of its time and John Browining was a visionary firearms maker. We drool over 1911's 100yrs later. The design still works and is one of the best pistol designs ever. Its perfectly balanced. The 45ACP is a round I would trust using ball. The 1911 advanced as did technology and is a viable SD firearm and is my person favorite.

Has to be a .45. Either the 1911A1 or the 1873 Colt SAA or the 1875 Schofield.
If it was a single military pistol, it would be the 1911A1.
If it was a single pistol, it would be the 1911A1.
If it was a single specific model, my emotional response is the Series 70 Colt Gold Cup.
It sure wouldn't be a plastic gun.

I was in the Service long enough to see the transition from the 45 to the 9mil, I also carried a 38 Smith Model 10 and a Browning Hi-Power when I was with NATO and the Brits. Out of all of them I liked the M9 the best.

1911A1

When I joined in '85 we still had 1911A1's in my infantry company. The .45 ball cartridge had a 230gr fmj bullet. the 9mm has a 115gr fmj bullet. Unless a guy is an idiot he would know that 230gr has twice the knockdown power. Its only because our military has so many crappy pistol shots that they really need 15 rounds to put a guy down.

The old blackpowder revolver without the top strap.

I never understood how they did'nt just blow up in guys hands but they did'nt.

That and the old revolver with the hinge on it.

Nothing cooler then watching someone crack that sucker open to reload it.

And ,of course,the 1911.

But also the Luger-just an evily easy gun to shoot well.

Those flap holsters were just wild looking for those things too.

And I have to say the Tokarev semi.

A 1911 clone I guess but made like a block of steel.

Browning Hi Power

Been around since 1935, designed by John Browning aswell. It's been used by over 50 countries and is still in service with the Australian Defence Force aswell as others. It was even used by both sides during WW2

I've found it very accurate, reliable and tough

Sorry, I read JUST the title of the thread and not the actual first post by the OP. it's a bad habit but USUALLY on all it does is restate the title question.

Since he snuck "US" in there, I will change my answers to the following:

Modern: Sig M-11. Didn't have to be general issue, right? (If it does, just rename the thread "Why is the 1911 your favorite US military handgun?")

Vintage: 1911A1. Nowadays, I like the arched MSH better because it makes me have a higher more controlled grip.

Antique: This one is hard to answer. My first instinct is to say the "SAA" but then I think about how long it takes me to empty and reload my New Vaquero. While I know with practice it can be done quicker, the single cartridge at a time system is still slow. So, I guess my pick would have to go to one of the top-break models that took smokeless powder cartridges, strictly because of reload speed in a hostile situation.

The good old M1911 is too old. Not to mention the low capacity.

Other M1911 versions are quite good, bad most have also limited capacity.

Glocks are good for Police/Security/Carry but i have an issue with the small trigger guard for Army use.

Berreta is good for me, but again i don't trust it for Army use.

USP is good, i am taking it any day. I like Sigs too. And maybe a M1911 from para (to get 14 rounds capacity) or even a Mk 23. But they are very expensive, and i guess i have to select something more suitable for standard issued.;)

Yes, i prefer Huge German trigger guards, to have some space in there in case i need to wear gloves. ;)

I'm very fond of the 1911-type pistol, but I also like the 1917-type revolver. My S&W M-625 (a modern 1917) will out shoot (tighter groups) my Colt Gold Cup (a modern 1911). My time in the service was pre M9.

Many different driections...many favorites

My favorite military handgun to look at is the P.08 Luger.
Favorite for use, and utility is the 1911A1.

I am also very fond of the Webley Mk VI, and the Walther P.38.

The Mauser C96 gets a spot in my collection as well.

There's more than just the M9 and M1911

There's also the Mk.23 and M11 (which is a SIG P228 I think) and the Mk.24 (SIG P226 I think). The 1911 is still in service with some marines, it's just under the name MEU(SOC) pistol.

There are older US Military handguns I'm not familiar with that could be someone's favorite. Then I'm sure there are plenty of spec op guys that carry whatever they want.

All of them have to be good otherwise we wouldn't send our boys & girls out to fight with them.
