Favorite military handgun opinion please

For the U.S., it would have to be the 1911. I believe there is a reason it is still a favorite today.

The Glock is my world wide favorite. Is it legal to like both guns?

I only experienced the old Service .45 while serving. I doubt there are many who have experienced anything other than the M1911 or the Beretta 9mm. I guess there could be a few who were aviators and had a .38.

So, your question is rather moot. Why the question? You should of just asked whether you like the old M1911A1 or the M9.

I now own a Beretta 92FS, and I would of prefered it during my service time, but it was not a service weapon then.

Maybe you are asking the question of folks who have served in the military of other Nations. ??? :(

As I understand it a lot of officers were issued Colt Hammerless .32s and .380s a LONG time ago. Weren't revolvers also standard issue for many in the early part of the 20th century? Before that, I'm sure it was almost always revolvers.

The OP may also be asking about non-US military handguns.

Only one

Any 1911 A1 pistol right? Still used today and carried on duty. Covered all the US wars of the 20th century....!

19th Century: Colt 1851 Navy

20th Century: Tough one. Call it a tie between the M1911A1 and S&W Victory Models.

Glock 17.

Why?

It's light. It's reliable. It shoots strait. It's very easy to maintain. Very strong and take abuse most other guns won't take. And it holds a whole bunch of rounds.

But if we are talking nostagia, 1911A1. If we are talking war today, Glock 17.

Colt 1911A-1

Which I first was first exposed to in Vietnam. Later as a cop I carried 1911's my entire career as my primary duty weapon. Now that I'm retired, I still keep my stainless Colt Combat Commander loaded and handy around the old homestead.

I prefer the old 45acp. I still carry the Officers Model routinely. On active duty I carried a snub revolver in the early 60s while flying air defense fighters with nukes. While in Vietnam S&W Combat Master Piece 38 spcl. That is a nice revolver, but I would have preferred a Cold 45. I hated to see it go in favor of the Berretta 9. But I'm pleasedspecial ops are using the 45. That's the best choice when you need to shoot someone.

Colt 1873 Cavalry Model.

S&W M1917 revolver for U.S. If we expand to international, I'd say a Webley Mk. V, IMHO the best combat revolver ever made.

Modern: The Croatian HS2000.
Better known as the Springfield Armory XD9.

Vintage: Browning High Power.
This is a gun that doesn't get enough attention. IIRC it was the first successful double stack (magazine) pistol. It was the first "wonder nine" 50yrs before the buzzword was even coined by the industry. (Even though he died before it's completion, I THINK even JMB felt this gun was going to be an improvement over his 1911.)

Antique: Colt 1911.
I know it's not technically an antique until it's 100yr anniversary BUT it's close enough for a web poll. Besides 1911 was the year it was adopted for service by the military.
