Favorite mild 44mag loads.

I use win 231 and unique for mild oads in the 44 mag

9.5 grains of 231 under a 240 grain lead SWC bullet works nicely, as does 9.0 grains of Unique under the same bullet.

Here is one load you DO NOT want to try.

27 gr, 2400, 240 JHP, CCI mag primer.

Typo's happen, that has to be a typo as that load is so far above anything I have ever seen.

This was a powerful load, not really a plinking load, but above the 800-850 fps of a 44 Special

I do believe older Magnum ammunition was hotter than the stuff available today, but I can't prove it without pressure gages. I did shoot some vintage 44 Magnum ammunition in a Superblack Hawk, and the stuff was hot:

Smith 29 8-3/8" bbl.
200 grain X-Treme Plated bullet (RNFP)
10 grains of HP38= 1164 FPS Chronoed today

I didn't chrono mine today - it was three years ago. But I did the same load recipe; same bullet; and same gun (okay, it was a 629 8-3/8").

I got 1192 f/s. 10 round sample. I never retested it.

I always like those rare moments when data can be compared.

11.0 grains unique under 180 jhp, standard fed 150 primer. 1250 fps from 4 incher, and very accurate.

My favorite load in my 3" model 29 is 7.5gr of Universal behind a 240gr cast lead bullet. Very accurate and fun in other 44's as well.

10gr unique or 10.7gr CFEPistol. 1150fps with 240 grain xtreme wad cutter from S&w model 69. 17.5 grains of 2400 is similar if you like smoke and unburned powder.
