My vote is for the Rack of an 870.

Second is 8 rounds of 12GA plopping in rapid succession on a concrete pad while firing an Ithaca 37 "slam-fire"

Third would have to be the bark of a three round burst from a BAR.... SWEET.

I'm with Fed168 & M1A1John - "ting" or "ping" means,
"Reload that Grand Garand!" :)

OT: The smell of Hoppe's brings a flood of great memories.

Aim small. Miss small.

Another vote for racking an 870!

Also, I'm with Jim V--the four clicks of an SAA being cocked.

Plus:
1911 going to battery,
cylinder closing on an S&W N-frame,
operating the lever on a Winchester 94,
releasing the bolt on an AR-15.

:)

When I was in the army, it was the sound of a string of rds from the MK19. Wait a few seconds, them the whump, whump, whump of rounds on target. Couldn't get enough of it.
Now its the sound of a Barrett M82A1 chambering the 1st round from the mag.

I love the "snick" of a cartridge running home. I'm in a very nice place for this subject in that I work in audio, and have access to probably the world's largest commercial sound effects library. This library includes HUNDREDS of gun Sound effects. Hehehehehe

I particularly like the sound of racking a Remington 870. Mine's just a 20 guage, but I really like the sound. (Does the sound differ with the guage? I understand the receiver is the same configuration.) I also like the sound of racking the slide on hubby's Baretta 92FS. Well-oiled solid metal machinery working well. Sounds good.

Thanks for starting this thread. I had thought I was rather nuts; since we've become gun enthusiasts, one of the more attractive aspects to me are these small sounds. 'Course ya can't hear them at the range with your hearing protection on . . . :p

OTOH, the worst sound I've heard is racking the slide of a particular Makarov that I think was not well maintained. Dry. Fingernails on a blackboard would be music compared to that awful sound. (shudder)

When our shooting targets far away with a handgun and you have to wait for the impact....that thawhack is a pleasing sound....fubsy.

The sound of a Flintlock being discharged. Call me old fashioned, but that chink-bang-BOOOOOOOMMMMMM is just so rhythmic.

Magazine go in-Magazine come out. 'nuther great sound.

Unlatch and dump 6, reload and softly close the cylinder on a revolver.

Open the gate, push the spent case out of a S/A revlover. .45LC makes a real pleasing *ploop* that changes pitch as the case is extracted.

OT: But the sound of an Italian switchblade is one of my favorite things too. ;) (see the flintlock)

releasing the bolt on an AK-47 is good, that loud clack when taking the safety off is bad.
RAE, Love that switchblade sound too.

Chadintex, I think you're absolutely right. Before I bought an AK, I thought I'd heard great sounds, but the AK, now THERE's a great sound!

I also have to go with the sound of chambering a round in my 870, it's a "one of a kind" sound that almost everyone is familiar with. :)

Gotta agree with that. Actually, I'm fond of the sounds of the entire unloading / loading process of the SAA - From the 2 clicks of the hammer going to half-cock to the "fwap" of the closing loading gate.

Just to be different; The hammer dropping on my mid-`20's Marlin #38 while shooting Colibri's! :D

But, the #1 has to be the cycling of the Rem 870; followed by the ting of the Garand clip!

Almost forgot...

"Ready on the left! ready on the right! All ready on the firing line! You may fire when your target appears!"

I like that sound, too!
anodes.

The sound of my SA cylinder rotating as it's being loaded and the final full spin before closing the gate..

and of course, the whooshing sound it makes as I twirl it into the holster. ;)

Favorite gun sounds:

The "woofing chop" of the M-60 I used in the Army. I don't know how else to describe it: Like James Earl Jones shouting "whof-whof-whof-whof-whof!" through a 50,000 watt amplifier.

The crack of a .357 followed by the ring of a steel target.

The snick of a magazine being inserted.

The yip that the prowler let out when I raised the blinds on the window he was trying to pry open. A Smith & Wesson Model 19 Combat Magnum looks like a railroad tunnel at that angle and distance.

The soft, satisfied chuckle of someone who's just retrieved his target and is looking at a single, ragged hole right over the X.

The echo of a .30-06 off the canyon walls while hunting mule deer in New Mexico.

The smiling "thank you, come again" of the young lady at the local gun shop.
