"The Fn-Minimi and the GE Minigun are in another category entirely."

Really. What category would the Minimi be in? It's an individual weapon, not crew served, is in 5.56, hummmm.....I don't see the difference, other than it not being select fire. So what.

I vote for the AR/M16 series. I've shot the AUG and the FNC
before, too, but I honestly didn't care for them. Since I'm a new AR fan, I'm going to give it the thumbs up. I also think that one
rifle that was left off of the list is the Mini-14 (or for you select-
fire guys, the AC556). I also got to fire off a couple of mags in an
AC556k years ago, when the State Department guys were still
carrying them, and I was in the right place at the right time.

By the way, wasn't the M16 series originally called the AR-15? I
didn't think that it was called the M16 until the Army type-classed
it that way.

Brian, It is a squad automatic weapon. It is capable of a much greater rate of fire and is the primary support weapon organic to the squad. It is not as well suited to point targets as the M-16 but the 16 cannot handle the volume of fire that the M249 is capable of. Different tool for a different job, there is some crossover but not too much.

I'm surprised the well regarded SIG 550 series hasn't come up. Light, strong, folding stock, HK sighting arrangement and best accuracy of any 5.56 issued weapon. I'd probably go for that or the daintier AUG.

For right now I have to say AR-15, from a good make. If my Micro-14 really shines in some trials I have planned when I have time, I might say Mini-14, but one has to do alot of work themselves to make a Micro-14!

Mini-14/Ar-180

Well, of all I've had and all I can afford, I like the Ruger Mini-14. Really.

Tough, reliable, trouble-free, accurate enough, cheap. Only down side for me is cost of Ruger hicaps, finding others that work.

I don't like cleaning the ARs, they have been less reliable and more trouble than the Rugers for me and on LE ranges here as long as I/anybody can remember, yet the ARs are still way more popular.

I don't like the sights on the AK, and the bolt that doesn't lock open when empty.

Looking fwd to Armalite bringing back the AR-180 myself.

M249 Squad Automatic Weapon SAW. It was my favorite in the Corps and I wish I could have one now. Same as the FN MINIMI in Brian's vote.
