hey, great idea.... let's perpetuate the misnomer "assault rifle"

My AR-15 is not an assault rifle. It's a semiautomatic rifle

*sigh*

Notice the M16 listed next to the AR-15. The reason I listed the "AR-15" is because with the vast number of configurations available for the AR family, including select fire configurations, simply putting "M16" is limiting. The M4 Carbine and CAR-15 aren't technically M16s. Neither are Colt Commandos or XM177E2s. They ARE, however, AR-15 variants. Every rifle on the list is select fire.

Please don't jump down my throat like that. I made no misnomer. A select-fire rifle firing an intermediate cartridge is an assault rifle. Every rifle on the list is Select Fire; an AR variant can be select fire or not depending on the receiver and parts you happen to have. Of course, select fire parts are illegal and can't be had by civilians, but that doesn't change the technical function of the rifle.

Well ... I have to agree that there aren't any real assault rifles on that list ... where's the General Electric Mini-gun? Now, THAT's an assault rifle  ... or at least I thought so until I recently saw a Lockheed C-130 with a 105mm cannon sticking out the side ... I guess it's all relative. By the way, I think the G.E. offering uses the appropriate cartridge for this survey as well!

GE Miniguns

The standard GE Minigun was in 7.62x51mm. They did, however, make a mini-minigun in 5.56x45mm, with a rate of fire of some 6,000 rounds per minute.

Lugging around the battery pack and the necessary hundreds of rounds of ammo might be a bit of a burden on the ol' shoulders, though. LOL

M4A1, technically in the M16 family.

I do have experience with M4s, I evaluated/tested many of them in the mid 80's when they were XM4s in Quantico VA. Although I must admit the HK53 is also very nice.

Technically since this is the rifle forum and NOT the full auto forum this thread dopesn't belong here.

I'll let it run for a bit though as I'm sort of curious.

Given the fact that ALL these rifles are select fire AND many have never been imported to us civilians HOW are we supposed to have an opinion on most of these rifles? Conjecture? What we've read?

My choiceisn't on here. Any AK series (mak 90 , sar 3 , ak 100) in .223

Thats because I DO have experience with those.

I voted for the H&K G36, because it's the only one I've gotten to shoot, so far. I shot it, and a bunch of pistol-caliber SMGs, at the Front Sight July 4th celebration, in 2000.

Let it be known that anyone that votes for a Tavor or G36 has to back up their choice with story like Gorthaur did. Lets not forget to vote according to experience shooting the rifles not just playing Rainbow Six ;) I had to vote for the AR because its the only one I've had extensive experience with.

definition of favorite:

Which one do you think is the coolest? That makes the question less vague, and is a matter of pure opinion, no experience needed.

Night: From your list I've only used two. The AUG [the standard NZ infantry weapon] and an AR15. The AUG was more accurate then the AR and was easier to gain proficiency with, then the AR.

Of course the AR didn't have an integral scope.

The lack of the SA80 I can understand, but what about the SIG 550 ?

I was hesitant to even do this thread; there are so many 5.56mm rifles in the world today, much more than ten, which is the maximu number of choices.

You've got the Daewoos, and the Sigs, and the Beretta, and the new FN 2000, and the Japanese have their own rifle, as does Singapore, and that doesn't even get into the slew of 5.56mm AKs out there (select fire versions, even).

Of the ones listed, I think the G36K has a combination of features that I find the most appealing. I like what I see with the new FN 2000, as well.

True, my experience is limited to the M16A1 and A2, but that doesn't mean I think they're the coolest rifles out there. Not by a long shot...

I've shot the AUG, M16, and FNC.

Prefered the AUG, thought I can see why people like the FNC. Would like to get one of the semi-only AUGs imporeted here before 89, but.... hey, if you folks think HK91s run high...

Of those listed the only ones I have not fired are the Tavor and the stoner 63. Unfortunately your question is very subjective so it is hard to answer. Of those listed I believe the AR series, especially the M4, is the most user friendly. If you have an M4 with ambi controles you probably have a system that would be the most versatile of those listed.
The Fn-Minimi and the GE Minigun are in another category entirely.
How is it a misnomer to use Assault Rifle in this thread? All weapons listed are select fire, before it was type classified all military guns were marked AR-15. We have several A2 rifles here (Bosnia) that are rebuilt with AR-15 marked receivers.

Well,

During my days as an assassin with the Mossad I used a Tavor once. I had to sneak all the way thru a Palestinian town wearing my yamika and carrying my Tavor with a Level IV trauma plate duct-taped to my back. I made the hit, but it was difficult. It was great. I made the shot with iron sights from 2000 yds. A bit windy, but I did it.

BWWWAHAHAHAHHA:D

PUMC_TomG:

Did you forget about the part where you had a broken foot, from the landmine you stepped on, and had to limp all the way through town, even though a scorpion stung your big toe on your other foot?

What a hero. We're proud of ya'.

:D
