At one time, cross draw was in mode for competition, but fell out of favor for strong-side. So at one time, it was considered the way to go. At one time, after the fad was over, I got a high-end N frame cross draw holster on the cheap out of a box of used holsters at a LGS.Make a nice cross draw holster. It's always fun to practice cross draw and cavalry draw when playin around with your quick draw. I do it with my pietta 1858 rem. 8 inch barrel cap and ball.
Re: Cavalry draw. I have always been interested in all things cavalry (including the horse stuff...had horses), and was impressed by the utility of the butt-forward on the right side of their holsters. By having the butt-forward, a trooper could wield his saber or carbine in his right hand, and cross-draw his handgun with his left hand...brilliant. However, at this stage of my life I don't think that I will be practicing drawing with my left hand.
