Extreme vs. Berry's vs. Rainer

I've used all three but in 9mm that are 115 gr RN. I've also used plated bullets from FMP, RMR, and everglades. No problems with any of them and the RMR seem to be the least expensive and have a little thicker plating like the Xtreme's. I have also pulled apart loads with all of the bullets I've used and none of then had any plating come off.

One thing I always want to address when it comes to plated bullets, is velocity. People always want to push bullets fast. Whats wrong with slow and accurate? These are target bullets, so why not load for accuracy and disregard velocity all together? In .44 Magnum and .357 Magnum I easily achieve very accurate loads that are under 1100 fps. You'll use less powder, get longer brass life, and expose your gun to less pressure. As long as it's accurate and clean burning, I'll take a slower load any day unless it's a hunting load.

I mostly agree - I stay mid range to a little below for my plinking ammo. Some people like to push the velocity just because they can, though, for the same reason some folks drive fancy sports cars on city streets.

+ 1 for berry's, love the 9mm 115gr rn. Also + 1 for not maxing out the loads. why wreck up your barrel shooting at paper.

Please understand that when you question the motivation for other people to do their own thing with their own guns, you get in to a pretty pointless discussion.

I can't imagine why anyone would want to own, load for, shoot and clean a ______ but why does that matter to those that do?

I am one of the folks that WILL run some loads and some guns to their safe and proper limit and I don't need a reason beyond "I wanna!" and I'm certain that I don't need anyone's approval in that venture.

sevens point is spot on.

What if I want to practice with a round that kicks much like the full house 158 gr.JSP load I carry in my 357 when I am hunting?

Or My 125 gr. JHP carry ammo?

Or My 'Insert load and caliber here'?

Many want to practice with ammo that simulates what they carry for whatever purpose. That in many calibers means VELOCITY.

Another associated little bit:

Those of us who do it tend to have hands-on experience in that venture. Doesn't necessarily mean that by default we are "old pros" at it, but it does put us in a good place to do it, to know what to look for and expect, and to see the results of what we do.

It could be that I am really lucky...
In 25+ years at the bench, I've never damaged a firearm with my handloads and I have also never managed to wear out a gun.

Haha, that's likely because my 10-15k annually is spread out over dozens of handguns.

Then buy jacketed bullets, not plated.

FITASC Been doing it since Xtreme was West Coast Bullets...20 + years. Guess what.. Speer Gold Dots ARE Plated bullets. Factory Jacketed bullets are not always run to their max potential...ref. 9mm+P as an example. Worked up, good plated can be made to approximate factory jacketed for less $$ AND be safe when worked up properly.

That is why I can not stand all of the MISINFORMATION and generalization concerning plated bullets.

Not all plated bullets are the same. Goes directly to the OP's question.

I've used all three to good effect. Had a problem with Berry's 200gr. .45 plated flat point in that the ogive started so far forward I had to reduce the o/a lgth.
from 1.200 to 1.165 otherwise the bullet would jam into the rifling of my CZ97 as well as a friends Ruger 1911. Have pretty much started buying Extreme exclusively with my only complaint being they are so shiny I've experienced false chronograph readings if I don't paint them with a majic marker.
Nobody would believe my 4000fps. readings from a .45ACP.:D
