Exposed Hammer Concern or Not?

I've never had any problems with a hammer, and prefer it.

What I hear from most people is , "it will catch on clothes" .....

I've never had that occur, and I've carried and used one for a long time. It makes me wonder how they are drawing it out of their holster... or if it's just "wives tales".

No problems with spur hammers and waistband carry, but in my experience a snubby with a spur hammer tends to snag during the draw with pocket carry.

I don't get bitten in the side by the hammer, but I do have a jacket that has a hole in the lining from years of the hammer rubbing against it.

A couple of times, I've barked my elbow on the rear sight blade on a revolver.

One of my carry guns is a Smith 637 j-frame with exposed hammer. I carry it in a Kydex paddle holster and have never had issues with the hammer. I'm guessing that you might experience some discomfort with an IWB holster if there's no barrier between your skin and the hammer spur. I don't like IWB for a variety of reasons and don't carry that way. Another great thing about an airweight j-frame is that you can pocket carry it ...

I've primarly carried revolvers with an exposed hammer since around 1980. I've never had a problem with the hammer.

For the last 10 years, I've mostly carried a S&W 637-2 in any of several different holsters/ways, and it's not been a problem.

I've never owned a revolver with a bobbed or internal hammer.

I destroyed many a coat and jacket lining do to hammer spur damage. I only started to damage myself when I hit the 15 at 50 law:eek:
